jig join:2001-01-05 Hacienda Heights, CA | here's the stupid thing. i hear that the end installation is supposed to be the shuttle in launch position with the solid boosters. that's utter bull****. it's a fantastically bad idea to put something like that in a horribly earthquake susceptible position. it also probably means that the closest you'll get to seeing inside the cockpit windows is something like 150ft.
personally, i think it would be immensely better (and probably gigantically less expensive) to just keep it in flight mode.
anyway, i keep hearing this on KTLA. they may be on drugs. if they aren't, be sure to see it while it's in the hangar (if you didn't see it on the road). -- Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam. |

 | Agreed: A launch position display would be a tragic mistake. |

| Thanks for the link.
Seems like it will be in the hanger for several years, though, before it's moved into 'launch' position. -- Things are more like they used to be than they are now. |

Other than the earthquake concerns it's just a bad idea to display the shuttle it in a manner that prevents visitors from being able to see all that neat stuff on the inside. He believes that there will be a walkway across the top of the display where one will be able to stand and see the cockpit from a distance.
OTOH I have a feeling that it was gutted when it was decommissioned, and there's probably less knobs and switches to be seen in that cockpit than in a WWII bomber. If it were up to me I would display it in horizontal position, with the cargo bay doors open and the robotic arm holding a mock-up of some satellite that had previously been carried into orbit. |
