Not that surprising given their history. Push out a cheaper, "better" version right at the end of the lifecycle and sell them for cheap for a few years after the next Playstation comes out. Playstation consoles have a history of being purchased long after the next generation is out, so it makes sense to push out one final model. They did the same thing with the PS2 slim and PSone (Hell, the 2600, NES, SNES, and Genesis all did it too). With the low production cost, they'll be able to reduce the MSRP a lot after the PS4 is out while still making a profit. That's probably not something they could have done with the current SKU.
