Parents of starved Alberta girl can attend funeral

The parents accused of beating and starving their two-year-old girl will be allowed to attend her funeral Saturday, an Edmonton judge has ruled.

Arrangements are being made for the girl who died Thursday night after her ventilator was removed. The girl, who can only be identified as "M", died hours after the Supreme Court of Canada denied a motion to keep her on life support.

I wonder what went wrong. Neglectful parents usually have drug or alcohol abuse issues which does not appear to be the case. Physical abuse unfortunately runs in all cultures but the combination of starvation and abuse seems very unusual here.

could it be the gender and girls were not favored, or a burden

Could be they're a couple of religious wingnuts trying to beat the devil out of their children too. Either way, with the sister in protective custody we'll probably never know because the court records on this case will remain sealed for a looooong time.

the sister is too young to tell anything, not sure how old their son is who is also in protective custody....

i find it bizarre that they were allowed to the funeral, more than likely there would have been a backlash to the canadian courts had they failed to escort these wing nuts to the funeral, at taxpayer's expense.

The article said they were of Muslim Faith.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

Hundreds of people also went to this girls funeral at an Edmonton mosque (not a mosque the parents belonged to) - »www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/···ral.html

Very sad to see them carrying the little coffin.

I was going to say that it's too bad those hundreds of people didn't care more when the child was alive. Then I stopped and decided that maybe they didn't take the kids outside. At an older age maybe a teacher or someone at their own mosque might have noticed. Hopefully it's a case of they completely isolated themselves, and not that other people just didn't think it was their place to intervene.

Yep, to sentence two. Refer to other thread where Gone and I mention that we never see kids outside and a family could keep their kids 'hidden' well enough until 5 or 6.

In court, the parents had argued the decision should be left to them and they couldn’t agree to withdrawing life-support due to religious convictions and love for their daughter.

you starve and malnourish a child which ultimately means death, but you can't withdraw life support due to religious convictions...they might be different methods, and one takes longer than the other, but ultimately they both bring death...what's the difference religion wise?

Abuse is all about control, and their response to the child that they more or less already killed is a perfect example of their fucked up mentality. They attempted to maintain control right until the very end. Thank goodness they were denied that satisfaction.
