High latency during peak hours

Sometime between 6-11pm I experience high latency on my dsl line. I have already had the modem swapped and tested all connections/cables, connected directly to the modem.

Here are my modem stats with no latency at 4pm (20ms):

Mode:G.DMT
Type: Fast
Line Coding: Trellis On
Status:No Defect
Link Power State: L0
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 13.7 12.0
Attenuation (dB): 31.0 17.0
Output Power (dBm):19.7 11.9
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 9152 1108
Rate (Kbps): 6016 800

And after at 7:30pm when I experience latency (500+ms):

Mode: G.DMT
Type: Fast
Line Coding: Trellis On
Status: No Defect
Link Power State: L0
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 17.2 14.0
Attenuation (dB): 31.0 17.0
Output Power (dBm): 19.7 11.9
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 9152 1156
Rate (Kbps): 6016 800

There's nothing really out of the ordinary on those stats, the SNR change seems a bit odd, but both numbers are good, wondering why your only syncing on G.DMT but not really a big deal considering the speeds available.

Checking the internet side, where are you pinging that you are seeing the large latency? Do you see any other issues? Disconnects? Time when the connection cuts out?

On the local side, have you bypassed the router? What modems have you tried, what are the stats on the other modem? While it doesn't sound like its router related, its always good to simplify your setup when your having issues.

Here's a tracert:

Tracing route to vianet.ca [209.91.128.142] over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms DD-WRT [192.168.2.1]
2 442 ms 531 ms 496 ms sud-lns-2.vianet.ca [69.171.101.1]
3 671 ms 641 ms 709 ms sud-core1-i4-4.vianet.ca [209.91.137.49]
4 703 ms 559 ms 632 ms uhs1.vianet.ca [209.91.128.142]

EDIT: And yes I have tried bypassing the router. The modem is identical to the one that was swapped.

First hop Intermittent issue, could be a messy issue... not sure the company... i assume they are a wholesaler?

Has a trouble ticket been put in?

WHen you say "Sometimes between 6-11" what exactly is Sometimes defined as?

By that I mean the latency issue starts around 6'ish and ends around 11'ish. The ISP is Vianet who uses Bell Nexxia lines and I have emailed them again so hopefuly they look into it. If I don't hear back I will phone them again to see what's going on. Originally the speed was really slow (talking 1Mb or so) and that seems to have been fixed with the modem swap but latency remains.

If your ISP has multiple AHSSPI links to Bell-land, you might be on a crowded one and restarting the PPPoE session might land you on a less crowded link that could yield better pings.

You could try running a speedtest while pings are down the drain and see how bad speeds get. If it is indeed congestion either at the AHSSPI or ISP/transit levels, speeds should be much slower than normal as well.

Indeed, I take back my statement that the modem swap fixed speeds. I ran a speed test and got 2.78Mbps d/l and 0.52 u/l. Ran another and got 5.23Mbps d/l and 0.61 u/l. Then 3.24Mbps d/l and 0.51 u/l.

Vianet has been absolutely the worst internet provider for all areas surrounding North Bay. I have been calling for the last three months to no avail. They said it was fixed, I just received a new modem to try and fix the problem. Here is just one traceroute, EVERY DAY after 5:30 PM until 11 PM it is like this. Can not do anything. I am going to try the new modem now. If it does not work I will be cancelling and demanding a refund of some kind for not providing the service that is promised.

Trace complete.

Again, got off the phone with vianet in Sudbury. I will be calling to cancel tomorrow. Everytime I call, I get the run around. They know they are overloaded for our area, they just keep saying they will get someone to "look into in." No more. Goodbye vianet.

Just for fun here are more traceroutes from at least an hour from my last, this time with the modem plugged direct into the pc.

EVERY night it does this. From 5:30 until 11 PM. DO NOT BUY VIANET. I am signing with another company tomorrow.

Sorry, but I think your problem is with Bell, not Vianet. Use test@test, password: test, as your credentials and then test your latency to their BAS (10.x.x.1).

How would I do that? I tried pinging 10.15.201.1 but it just timed out.

EDIT: Also would Bell Canada Direct forum be able to help, even if I'm not with Sympatico?

In Windows, the default timeout is 4000ms (4 secs), but you can use the -w option to change it.

Something is definitely wrong if it's timing out, it shouldn't be going over ~10ms. Here's what I get to bas3-guelph22,

Pinging 10.3.249.1 with 64 bytes of data:

 Reply from 10.3.249.1: bytes=64 time=6 TTL=127 seq=1
 Reply from 10.3.249.1: bytes=64 time=6 TTL=127 seq=2
 Reply from 10.3.249.1: bytes=64 time=6 TTL=127 seq=3
 Reply from 10.3.249.1: bytes=64 time=6 TTL=127 seq=4

 Ping statistics for 10.3.249.1
  Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milliseconds:
  Minimum = 6, Maximum = 6, Average = 6

Bell will not help you directly, you have to open a ticket with your ISP.

Vianet finally called and are looking into it. My ping right now is 19ms

EDIT: Latency back, they are gonna escalate it to bell. We are on a major Toronto BAS.

Can I jump on this thread? I'm with Primus DSL, and for the last 3 or so weeks I noticed a big slowdown starting around 8.30pm, lasting until around 11.30pm.

It's still ok for browsing, but impossible to download any files, they just time out.

When I run speedtest.net, it either can't complete, or it's in the 1.5 Mb/sec range. Funny though, Primus test comes back at around 4, and and Speakeasy also around 4.

Does this sound like a Bell issue? Does anyone think they are throttling? I seem to remember reading CRTC disallowed that a while back?

Maybe the same issue if your on the same BAS. My ISP just phoned and they are going to ping test my router tonight to see where the issue is.
