I figured that I would be able to catch a glimpse of it being in Alameda but never in my life did I expect it to fly right over my head and so low to boot.

I have seen an orbiter up close (Discovery) so I know how big and massive they are. With no payload the orbiter weighs 176,000 lbs. It's amazing how a modified 747 can support it and fly with it on top. NASA has lots of cool info and videos on the process (scroll right):
