[iPad] Does browser/apps stay connected to net

When the IPad goes to sleep or you close the cover, do the apps/browser remain connected to internet?
and
When you use browser, multiple tabs open and hit the home button which closes browser, is the browser off the net then?

Only Mail, messaging, GPS, Music, etc. apps stay active "in the background"
Most apps go to sleep and are off the net, so to speak
