[Beginner] macbook pro and wireless

Macbook pro finds wireless network but will not stop looking for other networks causing the machine to be so slow in loading I could watch grass grow while I wait. I tried preferences and setting it to only look for my network but it continues. Suggestions? PLEASE-- frustrated beginner.

Short answer- It only actively 'looks' when you do. Once it grabs a network, it will stay there. When you look by clicking the Airport icon up top, or by going to network prefs, it's assumed you want to change networks, so it scans for available ones.
