The error I get is a I/O error. I have put the HDD into the freezer to no avail.

Self recovery can be done by using GetDataBack software(»www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm)
free version is one file at a time, purchase allows recovering many files at once.
The first thing you want to do is image the drive if possible, then work on recovery. The image saves the existing data in case the drive dies later.
