Just tried to run the latest version of WDO (from a USB drive) on an older WinXP SP3 machine and got an error during the boot process. Looks to me like Microsoft is using Win8 as a base for WDO and it doesn't support older processors.

Thanks a lot Microsoft.

It showed up as a Windows update a couple days ago. Drove me nuts trying to find the KB article. Just bit the bullet and let it do it's thing. No problems.......so far..........

WDO is the offline version of MSE. You download it manually.

»windows.microsoft.com/en ··· -offline

The problem is what you download from the above page is a stub/web installer and not WDO itself. When you run what you downloaded (mssstool32.exe or mssstool64.exe) all it does is download the real stuff from a Microsoft server.

The main WDO installers, that create a bootable USB drive with WDO on it are

imagepackage32.exe or imagepackage64.exe (around 190MB each)

and

mpam-fe.exe (32-bit definitions package) or mpam-fex64.exe (64-bit definitions package).

The issue is that I never saved (stupid!!!) the previous imagepackage32.exe file (that would work with older processors) and now you can only get the newer version even if an older mssstool32.exe stub is used. In short--you're SOL if you have an older processor.

This is one case where I ignored my own advice about stub/web installers. They're useless. ALWAYS--always get and save the actual install package. You cannot rely on a vendor to keep old versions etc.

F... Microsoft and f... Windows 8!

For those using previous versions of MSE, is that a slam-over-top ?

No. You have to uninstall the old MSE first. I did that manually but the new version may do it for you (?).

I know that last time I updated MSE it said I already had a version installed and to uninstall it before continuing.

Noted and thanks, I have some users that run MSE as a real A/V.
Gotta be done right or not at all. The new build may kick out the old build. I will post back as I'm deploying on a few PC's right now.

I'm aware of WDO, I was referencing when the MSE 'upgrade' showed up w/o the KB article.

As to the WDO problem, I'm assuming you're creating the usb drive on the older machine?

Yes I am. As I said the problem is that Microsoft has replaced the imagepackage32.exe file on their server. This appears to use Win8 for booting and Win8 doesn't support older processors.

I've searched and cannot find a (direct download) link to the previous version of imagepackage32.exe that worked just fine.

I (foolishly) assumed that Microsoft had updated the WDO scanning engine etc but hadn't changed the underlying O/S (Win7 I think) it runs on. Never assume...

The irony is that MSE (the same new version) runs just fine on that old box.

BTW here's a nice write up (with pictures!) that explains how WDO is installed.

BTW here's the text that shows up on the failed boot.
quote:
Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

This operating system uses the Physical Address Extension feature to support systems with more than 4GB of RAM. You'll need to use a PC with a compatible processor to run the operating system.

Error code: 0xc0000260

You'll need the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have and installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Setiings

The above is a variant of the classic Win8 boot failure message.

FYI this machine has 2GB of RAM.

I've found a (direct download) link for the previous imagepackage32.exe package

»go.microsoft.com/fwlink/ ··· id=0x409

This is from Wednesday, March 07, 2012 18:55:40.

I have no idea how long this link will remain valid. If you have an older machine get this version (4.0.1517.0) of WDO while you can!

Edit: Created a bootable USB drive and copied the files from the above package to it (it self-extracts) and voila a working version of WDO 4.0.1517.0.

Take that Microsoft!

Obviously, that bootable USB idea won't work if you have a really old system that does not support booting from a USB. I suppose you could create a bootable CD, but you did not say whether that would work.

The problem had absolutely nothing to do with being able to boot from USB! The problem would've been the same had a bootable CD been created.

WDO v4.1.522 uses Windows 8 as the bootable O/S (on USB/CD/whatever). Windows 8 does not support older processors.

What is not clear about that?

PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8

FYI WDO v4.0.1517.0 uses Windows 7 (confirmed) ==> no problem with older processors.

Some really old BIOS'es cannot boot from a Vista/Win7/Win8 USB/CD/DVD but that is a different (and wasn't my) issue.

I understand the original problem, that the new version of WDO will not work with older processors. Yes, it was perfectly clear. I don't plan on using WDO, but thanks for the download link and the warning about the new version.

I had downloaded the newest version of MSE on the 25th...worked perfectly for 2 days, then last night at 10PM, I happened to reboot...got that darned red icon in systray with an 'x' on it...opened up the software...said it was turned off, turn it on...which I did...after a minute or so, it changed to green.
the Error Code:0x800705b4...timeout period expired.
I read all the google & MSE stuff...checked everything...but if I reboot, that same stuff happens
What should I do?
Vista Home Basic SP2...btw, don't have any malware, etc. on this pc.
I really need help on this...it's driving me bonkers.

That's what I ended up doing. It recognized that I had a previous version of MSE installed and it ran an "update" install. Worked fine. I don't know why I never received any notification via Windows Update that there was a newer version available.

I updated three systems running Win 7 Pro 64-bit and all were updated via Windows Update. The new version installed over the previous version of MSE. No problems with those systems, so far.

I am looking to replace Antivir personal V9 and tried MSE listed here.
I too had MSE turn itself off and it was being stubborn, I got rid of it and went back to Avira, but time is running out for V9.
I don't know what I'm gonna use now.

I remember having this same problem with MSE from a previous Upgrade...and it corrected the problem when the last Upgrade came...I mean the one that was just Upgraded...was the 'good'-no problems MSE...maybe it's a 'everyotherone problemUpgrade' for me? *sighs*
I didn't reboot last nite.

Well if you Google "MSE 0x800705b4" you might find some tips but most stuff is along the lines of

"Dump MSE and get a real A/V program"

Actually I find MSE pretty good. It has identified/blocked a few things.

MSE Version Discrepancy
Just an FYI, my "about" in the actual MSE program after upgrade says this is version 4.1.522.0 not 4.1.0522.0.

The download page seen behind in my screenshot has the same discrepancy.

Just throwing this out there for record in case a question comes up, since version questions often do.

I love MSE and I did read everything about that Error Code.
I'm going to do a reboot to see if that darn red icon shows up again.
Well, I just did a reboot... (*&%% red icon again...did what had to be done after I opened it...1minute later...icon went green *sighs*
