anon posted : Add me to the list of happy customers that trashed a PK5001Z modem. Those stink, seriously. Even with a very recent firmware it was randomly resync'ing.

I had, however, improved things up with a straight run from the NID to the modem wall using CAT-6 cable and a RJ-45 wall outlet (I know about the cons of using CAT-5e or CAT-6 for phone lines but based on past experience, it was always, hands down, my best choice for long term, problem-free cabling).

I also went big and moved to a rock-solid Cisco 887VA router. In the end, I got a quite good signal being near a mile distant from the DSLAM:

Controller VDSL 0 is UP Daemon Status: Up XTU-R (DS) XTU-C (US)Chip Vendor ID: 'BDCM' 'IFTN'Chip Vendor Specific: 0x0000 0x71C5Chip Vendor Country: 0xB500 0xB500Modem Vendor ID: 'CSCO' ' 'Modem Vendor Specific: 0x4602 0x0000Modem Vendor Country: 0xB500 0x0000Serial Number Near: XXXYYYZZZAB 887VA-S 15.3(1)Serial Number Far:Modem Version Near: 15.3(1)Modem Version Far: 0x71c5 Modem Status: TC Sync (Showtime!)DSL Config Mode: AUTOTrained Mode: G.992.1 (ADSL) Annex ATC Mode: ATMSelftest Result: 0x00DELT configuration: disabledDELT state: not runningTrellis: ON ONSRA: disabled disabled SRA count: 0 0Bit swap: enabled enabled Bit swap count: 0 5Line Attenuation: 19.0 dB 11.5 dBSignal Attenuation: 19.0 dB 0.0 dBNoise Margin: 20.9 dB 17.0 dBAttainable Rate: 12492 kbits/s 1352 kbits/sActual Power: 19.8 dBm 10.8 dBmTotal FECC: 21 0Total ES: 0 0Total SES: 0 0Total LOSS: 0 0Total UAS: 21 21Total LPRS: 0 0Total LOFS: 0 0Total LOLS: 0 0 Full inits: 1Failed full inits: 0Short inits: 0Failed short inits: 0 Firmware Source File Name (version)-------- ------ -------------------VDSL embedded VDSL_LINUX_DEV_01212008 (1) Modem FW Version: 120306_1254-4.02L.03.A2pv6C035j.d23jModem PHY Version: A2pv6C035j.d23jVendor Version: Ap6v35j.23j 68 DS Channel1 DS Channel0 US Channel1 US Channel0Speed (kbps): 0 7168 0 896SRA Previous Speed: 0 0 0 0Previous Speed: 0 0 0 0Total Cells: 0 1517452225 0 0User Cells: 0 418378004 0 0Reed-Solomon EC: 0 21 0 0CRC Errors: 0 0 0 0Header Errors: 0 0 0 0Interleave (ms): 0.00 16.00 0.00 16.00Actual INP: 0.00 2.12 0.00 2.06 Training Log : StoppedTraining Log Filename : flash:vdsllog.bin

As you can see line is sync'ed at 12Mbps, which is pretty much the ADSL 1 upper limit speed.
anon posted : I am having the exact same problem with my new Zyxel PK5001z modem from CenturyLink. Basically makes playing online games that need to connect to a server unplayable because every 15 to 30 minutes I'll lose the connection to the server. I read somewhere else that setting the modem to bridge mode and then setting up a wireless router in bridge mode would solve the problem, but I am having an issue getting my Netgear WNDR3700 setup in bridge mode. Looks like it might be easier to get an older modem like the 660 and use that instead.

anon posted : After multiple trips from the Centurylink team to fix my problem......I have solved my issue. I had DSL installed a month ago and have had Internet disconnects every 15 to 16 minutes from day 1. After all new lines to my house....3 different new modems....and 5 different ports at the phone company, I still had the same problem. I could watch my modem stats for IPV4 uptime and it would count up to 15 to 16 minutes and then it would reset and start back over from 1 second. At the same time this happened I would lose my internet connection...but my DSL signal stayed on. It is the same problem that I have seen over and over on the internet with people playing different online games and getting disconnected with the PK5001z modem. The fix was to replace this modem with an older stlye 660 modem. My internet works like a charm now!!!! Obviously Zytel needs a firmware update for this modem to shut off the IPV4 uptime counter to fix this problem. As this is one of their newest modems in service, there is still no firmware upgrade as of yet. I really like the modem and would like to use it again so PLEASE update the firmware in this modem soon!! :D :D

I had similar issues with mine and had a friend who is in the business of setting up networks research it and look at the Modem/Router.

if you go into the router settings and turn the WPS off it will cure your problems. In fact if you turn the feature off on any brand of router it will likely cure most of your disconnect problems.

This type of issue with this and several other routers is becoming more common.
kinco posted : I recently had a field tech come out to check our lines. He was annoyed about having to come out so often and so he decided that since he could find no source of the issues I was having, he'd install a new modem. Well, and I know some of you say this might not make sense, but since the new modem was installed (he took our old Westell 7500 ><), our ping times have been frantic, I'm getting randomly disconnected from Xbox Live party chats and on online game lobbies.
