Check Engine Light After Bad Gas?

OK, here's the history.

2010 F150 26K Miles

On way home from work in 90+ degree weather it stalled after about 5 miles.

I got it started and drove another mile or so and it stalled and it was hard to get it started.

Pulled off the road and turned off the engine for 2 or 3 minutes.

Got back in and started fine.

I didn't have problems until the next time I stopped for gas.

I had hit the 50 miles till empty warning when I filled it up.

When I got in to leave the truck would not start.

Finally I had to pump the pedal while starting and I got it started.

It ran fine for most of that tank.

Filled it up again and drove about 100 miles and stopped and added some more gas.

No problems.

Then a couple days later leaving work the check engine lite came on and stays on.

I suspect I had some bad gas.

I'm hoping it will clear itself after I fill up again.

Mileage is unaffected and the truck runs fine.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dave

Did you over fill the tank? Sometimes topping off will cause this problem.
But yes it could still be bad gas or you might have a partial clog in the fuel pump. Was the station you filled up a high volume station? If it was a station that gets little business then bad gas is a good guess.

Well the re-fueling had nothing to do with it the first time it kept stalling, so I don't see a connection after the fact.

Have it properly diagnosed to see what the fault code is, and take it from there. Otherwise you are just guessing, and guesswork these days is very costly. It may be as simple as a loose gas cap.

Loose gas cap would not cause his starting/stalling problems.

Of course not, it would only cause the CEL. It hasn't stalled since before the fill-up, hence my suggestion they are separate issues.

Did not top off.

There is no gas cap on the 2010 F150.

I did stall once on the way home tonight but thereafter ran great and gas mileage is normal.

Thanks,

Dunno but it is capless. There is a special funnel if you need to pour gas in from a can.

If you don't use it nothing will go into the tank.

It's not the first ford to have a capless tank.

Is it still under warranty?

If so, why not let a good reputable dealer, look at it? I like to troubleshoot my own stuff, but you did pay for the warranty. Let them figure it out. Check your owner's manual - they probably will give you a rental while it is tied up. I know GM did at one time.

Do not know the last time I got "bad" gas.

I say the above, as I have bought many a vehicle at one place and then taken it to another dealer for warranty work based on reputation, including company cars.

Last truck I had did the same thing after filling up. Once that gas was gone the light went out.

If it's not gone by next month I'll take it in.

Mileage is spot on and it runs fine.

Thanks for the advice.

It's not the gas. Take it in before you end up getting stranded somewhere.

I wouldn't wait that long. Take it in and let them read the code and fix what's wrong, especially if it's under warranty.

One thing you might want to do while the Check Engine light is on is run a Vehicle Health Report from the Sync system. It sends the codes to the Ford dealer so they know what's up. Helped me with an intermittent air bag light on my Taurus. Ran the report, made the appointment at the dealer and the next day the light went off. They pulled the code for the passenger's sensor and replaced that. Been good ever since.

Take it to Auto Zone or some parts place like that they will read the code for free, dealer charges to read. If it is a code that was realated to the bad gas it(CEL) should go out within 5-10 restarts of the engine, if the truck is running fine now. You can also disconnect the battery terminals and that will clear the CEL and code and if the problem is persistant the CEL will reappear. For better info go to the FTE forum

It actually works pretty well - I've got it on my '11, as well...

They do sell a locking cap that fits it, if you're in extremly dirty areas, or are worred about gas theft. (of course, a 3/4" drill bit through the poly tank would be a much easier way to get the gas out, but I digress...)

Should the CEL go away on it's own once the problem is corrected?

It could be you got some trash in the gas tank if the tank you filled up from was had low fuel in it; or recently filled up. The sediment could be blocking your filter sock that is on the fuel pump.

It runs great except for the 3 times it stalled and the once when the tank was almost empty, I filled it, and it was hard to start then ran great afterwards for more than a week.

oh it will after you filled it there was enough gas in it sloshing around to keep the sediment moving around.

Could check the fuel filter to see what comes out of it.

I had this happen to me and hence the miles did not think nothing of it. I even had a few people check it out; couldnt figure it out they adjusted the fuel trim. Seemed to help for a bit.

It eventually burned my fuel pump up and i had to replace it.

Well, I also have a leaky brake light on the cab so there are two good reasons to take it in for service.

It should but I know I'd want to get it checked out for free before the warranty goes out.

Well, I disconnected the battery and the CEL is gone. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for all the good advice my peeps.

Update:

CEL stayed off and has not returned.

Wife took the truck to Kroger for a fillup and after the fillup truck would not start unless gas pedal was pumped.

Ran fine after that.

CEL still off after 20 miles on the road.

The CEL is off and there are no symptoms so it's probably going to be a goose chase to take it in.

I still have many mile and months to go before the warranty expires and then I have a 6 year 60K power train warranty which I believe would cover this type of thing.

Thanks for the advice folks.

I love people that ask for advice, and then don't follow it.

Most modern cars have a way to pull your own codes....Usually holding a key combo down or turning the ignition on-off x number of times. Once you have the code, it is probably listed online somewhere.

Or you could....you know....take it in for service like every other person has said and you've ignored.
