Re: Need help with fiber and ethernet

I had a similar issue with a long run on CAT5 which was over 700 feet. My IT director told me to just put a simple workgroup switch at each end and connect them with CAT6, to my surprise it worked. I'm not sure what the day to day performance is like but it is only used for monitoring equipment so the alarms seem to work fine.

I just recently purchased some media converters for a 6 mile fiber haul and they work fine. I don't remember the exact model but here's where I started: »www.cdw.com/shop/search/result.a···er=&sr=1

So do we need two of these »www.cdw.com/shop/products/StarTe···690.aspx at both sides ? I prefer gigabit since the Sonicwall are now all gigabit and we have gigabit LANs as well.

You need a pair of these per Ethernet cable you're extending. So if you're extending two LAN's from one building to another they yes you'll need 2 on each side.

I assume you've already got the fiber figured out...

You're going to have to find a local company who can build you the fiber run and install a patch panel at both ends. You'll need single mode fiber (yellow jacket) since the media converters are rated for single mode.

You'll want patch panels with SC connectors, and I would suggest having a 12 strand fiber pulled in. This will give you some spares and growth if necessary. The last piece you should need is fiber jumpers to reach from the patch panel to the media converters.
