While this is impressive it means nothing to me and you in the real world.
That is a short distance, no load, not shared test...
Many areas have 50-70+ homes on one feed. Even if you can say that sucker could do 5Gbps. Say, 30 users out of the 70+ get your faster plans. Not enough exists for everyone still :P |

CableLabs ultra-broadband demo at the Cable ShowSome details on the CableLabs HFC DOCSIS ultra-broadband HSI demo at the Cable Show: Cable Show: CableLabs Kicks Tires on Ultra HD Industry's R&D consortium also demos next-generation cable modem tech running at up to 6 GbpsBy Todd Spangler, Variety - June 11, 2013 » variety.com/2013/digital ··· 0495345/quote: In addition, CableLabs is staging two broadband demos, one showing up to 6 gigabit per second download speedsdelivered over coaxial cable. The industry has maintained that it doesnt need an expensive fiber-to-the-home buildout, like the networks Google Fiber is deploying, to deliver very high Internet connections.
However, to achieve the speeds, the cable modems would consume the bulk of the spectrum on a typical cable system.
In the first demo, a cable modem based on the current DOCSIS 3.0 spec is delivering 4.6 gigabits per second over 768 MHz. The other demo uses the still-in-development DOCSIS 3.1 specification, with silicon from Broadcom, to deliver 6 Gbps in 750 MHz.
This is dispelling the question, Is DOCSIS 3.1 real? said McKinney, formerly CTO of HPs Personal Systems division who joined CableLabs last year.
Chipsets for DOCSIS 3.1 are expected in early 2014, with products ready for cable operators to roll out starting in 2015, according to CableLabs.

More information on how the Gigabit speeds were achieved with DOCSIS equipment: Cable Show: Gigabit DOCSIS? Yeah, we can do thatBy Brian Santo, CED Magazine - June 11, 2013 » www.cedmagazine.com/news ··· -do-thatquote: In the 3.0 demo, CableLabs was bonding 128 channels (using four 32-channel cable modems) to crank out in excess of 4 Gbps in a total of 768 MHz. Gigabits, unequivocally, yes.
The 3.1 specification is far from done, but it is certain the spec will include OFDM modulation and LDPC error correction. So in a demo that relied on those two technologies, CableLabs was pushing data at a clip in excess of 6 Gbps, but in only 650 MHz, the better to show the spectral efficiency inherent in the move to OFDM.

Re: CableLabs ultra-broadband demo at the Cable ShowIn response to a competitors fiber-optic HSI service, last week a Netherlands MSO fired up an HFC DOCSIS (3.1) 500 Mbps downstream service: UPC Netherlands ramps broadband to 500 MbpsBy Mike Robuck, CED Magazine - June 21, 2013 » www.cedmagazine.com/news ··· 500-mbpsquote: "We had to build a special modem because (DOCSIS) 3.1 chips arent out yet. We had to double up on the chips in the modem and put it out there because we had to have a competing product, if anything just in the press. That was a reaction but that tells you how quickly in a marketplace that something can move.
Warga said the cable modem was capable of bonding 16 channels, but UPC Netherlands was currently bonding more than that. : I know a few executives have it (500 Mbps) in their homes, but from there I dont know who is going to sign up for it, Warga said. But youre right, our biggest product is still 25 megs for 25 euros. Not too many ask for more, but in countries where theres not a lot of FTTH but theres fiber deep we do over 120 Mbps service. Theyll (the competition) will come in and say theyre 100, or 101 well come back and say were 110 or 120, or 130. Its a bit of a cat and mouse game, but we always feel like we can be ahead. For us 3.1 cant come soon enough.

lol! Right after I edit my post and put the product specs you post it. Seriously, within one minute :P. Kinda weird how the timing happened lol. Too bad these threads don't update edits real-time as they do with new posts. Also, I'm curious if Comcast will roll out this gateway(With the usual Comcast gateway look) along with the two others? Seems like it matches them. |
