[NJ] Looking for a new bank

TD has finally pushed me over the edge. So now I'm looking for a new bank. So far, I'm looking at Beneficial and PNC, and was wondering if anyone has any experiences with either of them. The biggest things I'm interested in are free checking, good online banking, and no ATM fees (I don't think Beneficial has any, PNC is in every Wawa so not a huge deal). Thanks.

Any way you can get into a credit union?

I am not sure how it is in NJ, but here in PA there are a few that pretty much anyone can join.

So put me on a highway, and show me a sign.
And take it to the limit one more time...

The only problem with that is the lack of locations. Driving all over the place just to get there is not something I'm not interested in doing. I don't need a lot of branches, but I do need a few options.

Would seem PNC is all over up there, so may be a good option. Read any online/Google reviews of those branches? We have a PNC here that I looked into, but their interest rate was worse than most others around, and their safe-deposit box fees were high.

When I was in southern NJ years ago, had an account with Commerce One, I think it was, or maybe First Commerce...something like that. Was decent. Not sure they're around anymore though...

Any smaller community-based banks in your area? Sometimes those are best for overall service and fees....just no national access...

Commerce Bank is now TD Bank. They're open 7 days a week and are generally well-regarded.

Do you need branches? I switched to charles schwab and have been very happy for 2 years now. I can deposit checks with my phone, no ATM fees and they reimburse me for a few each month too (don't know the limit on this, but they just reimbursed me $3.50 for taking money out at the Phillies game.). I honestly don't miss branches at all, they do have a few in the area, but not a lot and hours are not very convenient.

To respond to a few of the posts:

TD is who I'm currently with. They've pissed me off for the last time.

I do need some branches. The ones I'm looking at are smaller regional banks. No small local banks nearby. PNC offers me more access, but so far Beneficial seems the way I want to go. I'm just concerned about their smaller number of branches, especially after being with Commerce/TD for over 20 years. TD does have convenient locations and hours, but their service and corporate policies have gone down the crapper.

I use a northern NJ bank that only has 20 branches. It's not a problem because:
• There's a branch within walking distance of my house.
• They don't charge to use other banks' ATMs.
• They rebate the ATM fees charged by other banks up to 4 times/month.

So a smaller bank is not necessarily a problem.

Just out of curiosity, what don't you like about TD?

The service has been going downhill for years, and has just gotten worse since TD took over. Add to that Commerce never played the fee game, but TD is just as bad with fees as all of the big banks now. The final straw was a teller not honoring my request to change the amount of a deposit when I realized it would result in $x.99 returned to me. Hoping to help them out, I asked to reduce the amount of the deposit by $.01 so I got back a full dollar amount. Instead the prick teller took 99 pennies, threw them in an unsealed letter envelope separate from my bills and sent it through the tube.

Just a quick update, I decided on Beneficial. I haven't had any real chance to use them as I'm still in the process of running everything down with TD. But I've got one account already closed, will probably close three more today, and will just have one remaining check to clear before I am totally done with them. Signing up with Beneficial took a bit longer than I expected, but that was from them taking their time to really go through everything with us and a computer glitch.
