Re: [TWC] New Modem Lease Fee NYC

The current D3 modems can bond to additional channels than D2 and some older D3 modems. I decided to go with a SB6141 for my Turbo plan in case RR decides to up their speeds a little more. I think the existing Turbo speeds are reaching the ceiling of what existing D2 modems are capable of providing.

I'd go with FIOS if I could but I doubt they'll get to me before 2015 so the modem is a better investment for now.

A wise decision. In most areas Turbo is capped out with a D2 modem.

I can confirm patt2k. My parents in Ridgewood, 11385, Himrod/Metropolitan/Forest Ave has FIOS. In fact, I just upgraded them (I pay their phone, internet, tv cable bill) to FIOS only 2 weeks ago. It has been available since end of August.

Uh oh. When is Los Angeles/L.A. going to get this leased cable modem fee? I thought old subscribers won't get it.

Speaking of the devil. It appeared in today's paper monthly bill.

my current TWC provided modem is a DCM425 which goes for $49.95 new or as low as $8.90 used on Amazon. it's hard to justify paying $4/month for this.

Is the RCA DCM425 still good for Standard service (10mbps down and 1 mbps up)? And how long will it be good for it before TW finds some way to force us to upgrade? The Amazon seller actually charges $9 shipping, but at about $18 it's still a good price. The price is similar in most places.

TW's approved modems only consist of Motorola models. Will there be any issues if I buy the DCM425?

I'm just sitting here waiting for Fios to reach Astoria so i can switch. Heck, even RCN would make me happy!

I switched to rcn Internet here in LiC,queens and never looked back. $35 a month for 25mbps is awesome!

First of all, I think Time Warner is a total piece of $hit for giving me less than two weeks notice about this new charge after years of having their service. They suck!

For those that need a list of 'approved' modems go to www.twc.com and type in "compatible modem list" in their search box and look at the document called "buy or lease your modem" (ironically if you search for "buy or lease your modem" the document does not appear). This document will display a complete list of compatible modems for your area.

If you have their slower cable internet offerings ("lite", "basic", or "standard") then you are fine with a DOCSIS 2.0 modem. If you have one of their faster internet offerings ("turbo", "extreme", or "ultimate") then you need DOCSIS 3.0 modem. See their list for complete details.

I literally live on the only block in Astoria that only has TW. Either way i got myself the SBG6580, and got my DirecTV installation for tomorrow. I got HD-DVR, 2 normal HD reveivers, and service for about $51 for the next 2 years. Hopefully by then, ill have that wonderful Fios.

Glad I purchased my own sb 6141 so I could see the signal levels and stuff as TW blocked it on their own sb 6580. Thanks TW for doing this and making me buy my own modem ahead of time cough. Of course since I had a lot of problems they allowed me to keep the inactive sb 6580 in case I want to change back and so I will have to make a trip to queens blvd to return it formally.

No, I mean as in if they see you, no support. They won't even touch your modem. Also they don't have to issue software updates for it either. It will be the customer's problem to support the modem 100%.

So I can flash my modem with Blackcat (no, I do not plan to uncap the modem)?

What happens when dbmv is -10 and 1mbps down?

The NY Times has picked up on the story: »bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/0···-rental/

This particular comment makes me dread the day my new cable modem arrives:

quote:
Just dealt with them on this today after buying one of the approved modems. After an hour and 15 minutes on the phone and talking with three tech support reps, an added kicker--once they have the new modem's MAC #, you need to call back again after (at least) 24 hours so that they can "provision" the modem and actually get the internet service working on it. Luckily, I still had the leased modem at home. Even though no one from TWC told me this, I can still access the internet using the old modem until I try again w/the new modem tomorrow.

·RoadRunner Cable

»www.timewarnercable.com/nynj/sup···ur+Modem says for those with Internet and Phone:

"How to Connect your own Modem if you have both Internet and Home Phone

Find an approved modem to purchase in the list below.
Buy your modem at a local retailer or online. Connect your modem at home using the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Keep the TWC provided eMTA. You will need another cable connection for your new modem. If you don’t have an available connection, buy a two-way coaxial cable splitter and two pieces of coaxial cable with connectors.
Remove the existing cable connection from the back of the eMTA, and connect it to the “Input” connection on the splitter.
Connect one end of the first new coaxial cable to one of the splitter Outputs, and connect the other end of that same cable to the eMTA.
Connect one end of the second new coaxial cable to the other splitter Output, and connect the other end of that same cable to the modem.
Call TWC Customer Care to activate your new modem on your Internet service. Provide the Cable Modem ID (MAC address), usually found on the bottom of the modem. "

That's complicated. :P
