Well LTE Advanced is a 4G technology, but 4G is not just LTE Advanced (there's 802.16m and 802.16e). LTE itself is not a 4G technology, but most providers use LTE to mean LTE Advanced.
HSPA+ is technically 3G, and my 3GS with Bell still shows "3G" (even though Bell now markets HSPA+ as 4G to fall in line with AT&T (who screwed over the marketing for everybody)).
