[Embarq] my old modem gives me better line stats? ive been using the westell 7500 modem for a few months now and it has always been giving me bad line stats and yesterday i found my old zyxel 660r modem and plugged it up to see if it was better and i had my noise margin go up from 9 to 15 and my sync rate also went up why is the westell modem giving me bad line stats and the old 660r modem not
Just like all car radios do not pick up the same number of stations due to antenna sensitivity or design specs modems also vary.
Even identical make/models of modems can vary based on the internal components as they age and such.
Some models are able to ignore specific interference while others do not. Unfortunately there is no way to determine in advance which models work the best at specific sites due to the variables involved.
That is why I usually try to keep a couple of different brands/models around for test purposes at sites having problems.
While new models tend to work better, as you have seen it is not always the case. That is one reason I usually wait a year or two for the bugs to be worked out AND the customer reviews of products to surface before I decide on what to purchase for my own use.

in general, no matter where you get them, the westell 7500s are shit. centurylink now has zyxel pk5001z modems that you may be able to get to replace your westell.
One day, I'll blow up CenturyLink's DLSAM for my area.
