| reply to MJimLay I've had three root canals. Went to the dentist that does it while on the "happy" pill and Nitrous Oxide. No issues, 5 years in. I did get all three teeth crowned, and thank goodness for insurance so everything only cost about $1,800. (Crown coverage was only 50%) The ex also had work done on her teeth, nothing but issues. If they don't put the metal rod in correctly, you'll have issues. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

| reply to MJimLay The most annoying part of it is keeping your mouth open for an hour. Your practitioner will probably use a bite block making it easier.
Nitrous can make you trip balls if it's up high enough and you're basically defenseless after a certain point.
See if you can get a zolpidem (ambien) before hand and have someone drop you off / pick you up if you absolutely must.
However you'll be fine. It's just like a filling but a bit longer and you'll have a rubber dam on. -- "If something about the human body disgusts you, complain to the manufacturer" - Lenny Bruce What this country needs is a good five dollar plasma weapon. |

| There are technically different ways to do it. Also depends if it was a vital or a necrotic tooth.
The quick list for explaining it to a five year old is....
Access the tooth (open it up) Remove the nerve Instrument it (carve away at the canals, look for an laterals and such) Irrigation (sanitize and clean out) Obturation (filling and sealing with gutta percha) Then use a temporary sealer (likely Cavit) -- "If something about the human body disgusts you, complain to the manufacturer" - Lenny Bruce What this country needs is a good five dollar plasma weapon. |

 | reply to MJimLay I'm sure with all the input in the thread you will make the right call. Hopefully, you will also get the job done "right."
Frankly in my long life it is my lay opinion based upon personal extensive experience that other in a few areas such as cosmetic dentistry and implants, general dentistry has moved forward at about the same rate over the same period has witch doctoring.
Then, of course, most dental insurance plans are about as comprehensive and financially helpful as plans for witch doctor procedures too. |

| reply to MJimLay I think I had wings on when I had my root canal done almost 20 years ago. I remember nothing of it
I do have another tooth that still has the temp filling in it that was done like 12 years ago. they tried pulling it for an hour because doing a root canal would have been useless, but my roots are so long they couldnt pull it out. It bothered me for years afterwards, but it hasnt bothered me in a while.
get the root canal, you will be thankful you did. -- | map your city | |

Root canal it is then now deciding if i want to use laughing gas or not as i have never used it before so i don't know what type of reaction i'll have to it. Everyone is different. The Novocaine will numb you so fully conscious most people can handle it. My problem is my gag reflex. Having a huge hand in my mouth can be very unpleasant. For most of my root canals they gave me this tiny pill to take an hour before the appointment. It was the stuff Jeffrey Dahmler used to sub-do his murder victims before he killed and cooked them. It ruins your day. Last time I used it, the endodontist kept waking me up and I do remember protesting at one point asking him why. His answer to me was that my breathing was stopping and my blood oxygen level was dangerously low. Then when I regained full consciousness my wife asked me if I was having an affair. Apparently I propositioned her in the elevator in front of the doctor who was helping get me to my car. You are incapacitated for a long time. It takes me a full day to get over it and I really hate that crap.
Then there is nitrous. Great stuff, but it isn't for everyone. Some get nauseous. I have found it is all I need to conquer my gagging problem. Administered safely under supervision it isn't terribly dangerous, but there is always some risk. I have them crank it up to the max, put on some headphones and listen to some music. Within twenty minutes of them turning it off you are safe to drive. It has always worked for me, but your mileage could vary. |

MJimLay, if you normally have Novocaine when you get regular fillings, you should be fine with Novocaine for a root canal. |

I'm pretty sensitive to nervous system changes and can easily tell the deterioration in my driving ability after just one drink. 20 minutes after the nitrous is turned off, I feel totally normal. My dentist flushes it out with oxygen too and maybe that helps. If you just Google driving safety and nitrous, you will get hundreds of hits where dentists say you can drive after its use. I can see why for liability reasons your oral surgeon might prohibit driving, but I don't think that is a common position.
