The fact you have pain/sensitivity means the tooth is compromised. Do yourself a favor and get the procedure and be done with it.
Likely cap or crown would do it and not root canal unless sub gum infection obvious. VS twice as costly BOTH vs just a may remain healthy tooth telling you something.

MJimLay, if you normally have Novocaine when you get regular fillings, you should be fine with Novocaine for a root canal.
