Re: Being lazy: laptop suggestion for desktop replacement said by elwoodblues:The thing was that the drives are the same, so Dell buys a Samsung/Seagate et al drive sticks and they are OEM'd to Dell (based on the serial #).
No I don't murder that support,I can troubleshoot just about any problem and if it's a Hard drive I'll deal with it. It doesn't matter. If you have an onsite agreement with Dell and a tech shows up only to see that you're using non-"Dell" drives, he'll wash his hands of any issue even remotely related to the storage system and not only will you be on your own to figure it out, but you'll be the one paying for the replacement drive(s) while waiting for an RMA to return.
That's why you pay more for Dell hard drives. It's more than just the drive. It's the entire service and support. When I was doing IT and we were Dell authorized we would never put our own drives into a system unless it was a) our own b) the customer signed off and knew what they were getting into. |

Great product, but over the top expensive. -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. I could care less what you do, but as a former IT professional I consider it a matter of ethics if you are deploying hardware to clients and not making them aware that the way you are deploying the machine may have an affect on the warranty and service they're purchasing to go with it. |

To his credit, he was doing what he was told. I know in his last position the mantra was to "find a cheaper way no matter what". -- The irony of common sense, it is not that common. I cannot deny anything I did not say. A kitten dies every time someone uses "then" and "than" incorrectly. I mock people who give their children odd spelling of names. |

 | reply to donoreo +1 for the Lenovo refurb. I bought one at $379 and is rocksolid (knock on wood).
i5, 500gb, 6gb ram, hdmi, card reader, wimax. Faster enough for any heavy office use. |

Link LoggerPremium,MVM join:2001-03-29 Calgary, AB kudos:3 | reply to donoreo Being a developer I don't buy anything but loaded and fast laptops as being a business tool for me, its both a write off and my profession (think how much a Carpenter spends on his tools), so performance matters more then price. One of the things that I like about my Alienware that I didn't like about my old HP, is the lack of heat. Alienware handles it much better then my HP did as eventually my HP fried itself (ripped it apart so I could see the very nice bluing on the chip, before I tossed the remains in the recycle bin). Also the 18.4" of screen is helpful as the eyes aren't what they used to be when I was younger and toss in that I was able to customize it when ordering from Dell and customize it after receiving it from Dell is a bonus. The thing you have to remember with any computer purchase is between the time you ordered it and received it, 3 new laptops have come out that are faster and I'm OK with that as next year I'll order another new one and based on the performance of this laptop, Alienware would be my first choice right now. What I look for in a laptop is a slightly portable desktop replacement and I suspect most people want something different from a laptop. Certainly I'll order a Microsoft Surface Professional as soon as they are available (we have iPads available here, but they leave me wanting in a number of ways so I only use them when I absolutely have to, like to facetime with my Mom, I'll likely buy her a Surface as well so we can toss the iPads).
