AirwolfPremium join:2001-10-30 Windsor, ON | Provisioned upload speed Ultimate 30 I thought I read some time back that Cogeco provisions the upload and download speeds a bit higher than advertised so that it's closer to that as much as possible or I could be wrong.
If so, Ultimate 30 package says 2 megabit upload, what is it really provisioned for?
Thank you. |

boredguy join:2002-01-27 St Catharines, ON | For me on speed tests downloads are usually around 30-31.5, on upload though it's always between 2.0-2.1. -- What would Jesus do for a Klondike bar? |

That's really only necessary on DSL where there is significant per-packet overhead (due to AAL5, PPP, additional ethernet headers etc.). The config file your modem downloads when it boots acts like a speed limiter in a car; your modem could go up to 300/122 Mb/s, but you'd make the network pretty crappy for everybody else on your node if you did. |

There's overhead on cable, it just isn't nearly as bad as ATM framed DSL. |

 | reply to coaxguy I've been thinking the same thing. I didn't realise the upload speed was the same as COGECO. I am seriously contemplating a switch, seeing as it is about $11 cheaper per month with a higher cap. |

| Its a no brainer for the most part. But I also have phone with Cogeco. Ive already looked at going back to Bell for my home phone, but a basic line with call display is $38.99 a month. I really wanna switch to Start for inet, but im worried about the home phone situation. Id have 2 modems running off one Cogeco drop if I switch to Start and keep Cogeco phone. |

| You should investigate VoIP options. If you put a UPS on your ATA, router and modem you're not going to be any less reliable than Cogeco running their service over DOCSIS.
I use Acanac for my VoIP. $120/year for unlimited calling anywhere in Canada or the lower 48. I wouldn't have it any other way. |

 | reply to coaxguy I use Primus TalkBroadband as my telephone solution along with Cogeco. As long as you have no problems in your area with Cogeco (and I would assume it would be similar with Start) then you'll have no problem using a third party VoIP solution. Primus is rock solid, and I can recommend them without hesitation. I have a two-line telephone installation. |
