Re: $65 seems like a lot
Ting Wireless (Sprint) - Pay for what you use, will allow sprint phones soon (ever additional phone only $6/mo. They have addl taxes though.
Virgin Mobile - 300 minute (unlimited) $35 or $25/mo if you buy a grandfathered phone (triumph, a few LG's). I pay $24 a month because I buy refills and pay no tax. (Sprint)
Pagepluscellular (Verizon) The $12 (250 min, 250txt, 10mb), there is a $30 one w/ lots of min/txt 100MB/data
Tmobile prepaid - $30/mo - 100 min, unlimited data/text. This will mean you can use the same phone.
If you are in Brooklyn, Sprint works well in most areas.
If you are a low user, Ting is probably the way to go, because if you don't use a lot, you don't pay a lot. I would wait until they do BYOD, and then you can get a used Sprint phone and attach it to the account. They let you pool all your min/txt/data. For instance what you say you are using would be about $30/mo for TWO phones.
