Last year they barely had any winter, so this could make up for whatever was missing last year...

Better get in line for a generator (if you don't already have one) as snowstorms that occur before the middle of November will take out trees (as the leaves are still on the trees) and power lines as a result of falling trees.

Here in New England, we had an early season Nor'easter (snowstorm) on Halloween last year and there were widespread power outages and we live in the city and lost power for three days. Many were out for over a week.

I did manage to score a generator after waiting two hours in line at Lowe's and the power was restored several hours later. Had I not bought the genset, I would have been out longer.

Best to buy a genset before the lights go out because they fly off the shelves when there is power outages and they only have one model that they stockpile in their warehouses to ship to blackout areas (the one I got was a Briggs & Stratton Storm Responder Series 5500 watt generator). I just finished installing a manual transfer switch last week so I can use the genset.

When using a generator, follow the directions that come with them and NEVER RUN A GENERATOR INDOORS OR INSIDE AN ENCLOSED STRUCTURE. THEY ARE FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY! Also follow the manufacturers directions when using a genset.

I wish I still lived in Iowa; Everything there from rent and groceries to Cable TV is much cheaper in Iowa (especially with an overbuilder in town).

I did a job up in the Grand Forks area a couple years ago, about this time of year. I was amazed at the lack of backup infrastructure in that area. But I did get to say Hi to Paul Bunyan.

Grand Forks Bridge
One interesting thing I noticed in Grand Forks, is that due to the extreme temperature changes between summer and winter, the bridge there is actually on wheels to allow for the amount of contraction and expansion from cold to hot.
