Global action takes down tech support scam

Canadian, Australian and US authorities claim victory over crims
The USA's Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Australia's Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and Canada's Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) have each emitted near-simultaneous statements proclaiming the success of operations directed at sources of the scam. Canada has named and fined two firms it deems responsible, the USA has frozen the assets of six operators and initiated legal action against 16 companies and 17 individuals.

Australia is claiming credit for the bust, with ACMA saying it received complaints from Australians listed on the Do Not Call register that prohibits unsolicited telemarketing calls. As it investigated those complaints, ACMA passed on details to the FTC, setting in motion a process that concluded with a joint announcement by the three nations.

That articles starts out:
"Australian, US and Canadian authorities have jointly proclaimed a victory over scammers who call punters and offer unsolicited and unnecessary tech support."

My Wordweb software says "punters" means: someone who punts a football, or someone who gambles.

I assume the British must have a different use for the word?

Maybe the scammers were contacting computer users who were into on-line gambling because on-line gamblers might be more likely to believe that they had been infected by malware?

They called us and tried the scam several times. I was tempted to say "Yes, we've actually got several million malware items on our systems here, can you help?"

They had the "putners" check their event log to pull off the scam.

Now if they'd only use the same energy to go after the outfit(s) behind "Rachel" and "Cardholder Services", the world would be a brighter place. That scam is now morphing into a variety of other subjects: medigap insurance, credit monitoring, etc. - but they all use the exact same template for their robo-calls, down to the very "number to push" to be removed from their call list or to speak to a rep. It appears these bozos are using the Federal do-not-call list for their auto-dialers, and using VOIP to dodge being traced. Some variant of their calls will arrive here at least once a week, sometimes twice a day. Come on, FTC... step up to the plate!
