[OS X] Encryption software

Hi,

Can anyone suggest some good encryption software for my MacBook Pro? I will be upgrading to Mountain Lion very soon as well. Free is nice but have no problem paying for something.

Would like something easy and simple to use, just to encrypt some files or folders.

Thanks
Logan

Apple's own Disk Utility works great for encrypting files and folders. Create a new disk image and make sure you select an encryption method.

I also use AgileBits' Knox. Works similar to Disk Utility, but you can organize "vaults". »agilebits.com/knox

This. FileVault is transparent whole disk encryption. Everything you write to the disk will be encrypted in the background. Built into the OS.

If you only want to encrypt certain files, Disk Utility is free and works well, as Sebehk pointed out.

And make sure the password consists of upper case letters, lower case letters, and at least a couple numbers. 8 characters minimum. Encryption is only as strong as your password.

Thanks for all the replies.

I would rather not nor really did to encrypt the whole disk. Was just looking for something simpler to do some files or folders if I wanted to.

I do have a disk image I use for storing files and other information but again if I want to email a file or carry it on a flash drive. I will look at TrueCrypt.

Thanks again,
Logan

Install GnuPG with something like Home Brew. You can encrypt files with up to 4096 bit RSA encryption (it also supports other algorithms).

Says the password in the comic example is a good password.
