Re: CallCentric tech issues today?

[Update: Sorry-- I hadn't gotten until the end of the post until after I posted my comment. I now realize it's the hurricane that has completely taken Callcentric out of service. Sigh. I hope it's just a power outage and no physical damage.]

Not only is my Callcentric line dead today (it was working yesterday for the first time in quite a while) but the Callcentric website has been down for at least the last hour so I can't even forward my incoming calls to voice mail. (Right now when I call my Callcentric number from outside, the call just goes into a black hole of silence: no voice mail, not automatic forward to the backup line, etc.)

(The line is dead both on my telephone adapter AND on my BRIA softphone.)

Here is a website you can use to confirm that callentric's website is really down:

To give them the benefit of the doubt, I have to assume that the DOS attack now has moved to include their website as well. Some information about what has happened to their website would be most appreciated. (I am traveling on west coast and my wife is home in the middle of Hurricane Sandy with only a cellphone.)

I don't think Forwarding would work if the system was OFF...

I hope it gets turned back on tommorow.

Failover forwarding is not working. When I call my CC DID from my cellphone I get dead air.

Now, I'm not an "expert" but I have worked in telecom. A "carrier grade" facility, at least to me, implies a -48VDC plant that powers the switches. This is obviously not the case or failover routing would be up, since we were told in other post that failover is separate from the "consumer side" SIP servers. I have to make the assumption that not only is the VOIP service dead, the wholesale switching is dead too.

Let me add that this couldn't have happened at a better time for me. Being in Iowa, the only calls I get to my landline right now are those damn political calls! At least things are quiet tonight

Wow. That's just stupid on NYCs part. There should be exceptions for telecom. I now the federal government has been pushing for backup power at cellsites.

I don't know where Iscream is getting his info but plenty of buildings in NYC have emergency and stand-by generators.

Yea it does not make sense to me that they don't allow back up generators. They now even have natural gas power generators with dedicated gas lines... :/
For the first time ever that I have an actual use for my CC account this bs happens....
I am just not sure about this....

Next to nothing service for almost a month, but that did not stop Callcentric from charging my credit card.
I suppose they need the funds to pay for all the new equip and overtime?

I have been really patient with CC, have been using them for over 2 years now. Finally was sort of working today, and also finally got a response to my ticket. Then I had a call drop off in the middle AGAIN!! Well, tried to revert back to prior state in my PAP2. That didnt work!

Then I read my Twitter account, and CC says that they shut down their servers in NYC cause of the storm... WTF???? I mean, REALLY now? A company like that that does not have mirror/redundant servers in other places to PREVENT outages like this from happening?

I do like my CC service, but this is just bush league, not having mirror servers. I really dont understand that thinking.

Am I correct?

While I understand that first and foremost family and safety is first (In their current situation) this guys where just totally unprepared to support this past and present events. I feel like CC grew out of control and they did not care to grow with their customers instead they invested in service features and more bs features.... They lack real infrastructure.

We do have redundant power

at a personal level my heart goes out to all the CallCentric employees who are clearly doing their very best in conditions which are clearly not under their control; and now I add my best wishes to their families and loved ones as the situation in lower Manhatten and the East Coast is not going to improve any time soon...

When its possible I'd love someone from callcentric to remind us what their service levels are *MEANT* to be? Carrier grade (>5 * 9's) or not? (And 5 * 9's is still almost 9 hours of service down per year).

But what ever the service levels promised for the fees paid I'm *SHOCKED* that there is no disaster recovery for basic services - like the website. That we now can't turn calling handing on / off (and so can't forward the service back to ma bell / cellular providers) is *NOT GOOD*.

Or did all those extra servers recently installed as a result of DDoS attacks fail to also trigger an appropriate increase in the UPS batteries - hence UPS draw down was quicker than planned service levels? Again, that short cuts were perhaps taken in response to DDoS is understandable, that Sandy arrived when it did is unfortunate ...

*BUT* single points of failure - means at some level it appears CallCentire are relying on hope not engineering and sound planning, e.g.
1. Apparently locating all their facilities in one place is simply bad engineering
2. That from comments posted here and on Twitter CallCentric doesn't appear to have a disaster plan in place to deal with not being able to physically gain access to their facilities
3. That CallCentric doesn't appear to have a disaster plan to handle lost of power in lower Manhatten for an extended period (see point 1)

I loved CallCentric and moved most of my family to the service over the past year; the engineering of the website and service seemed good and this was reflected in the low but not lowest pricing... now I'm not so sure...

CallCentric is going to have to work hard to win this customers hearts back...

Finally, I'm sure all CallCentric customers will join me in hoping all CallCentric employees and their families remain safe and well over the coming hours and days...

(Actually, five nines is about 5 minutes of downtime per year.)

nope. this one is not DOS related. it's weather related.

Well, that's a bummer. Callcentric is blown out of the water by Sandy, The City of New York, and Con Edison, the Trio of Evil.

Can't say I'm overly impressed with their contingency planning. But, at this point, I'm just hoping whatever dank basement their equipment is located in in lower Manhattan doesn't flood with salt water from the 14' storm surge.

A little over a year ago, Verizon screwed me over after a rainstorm flooded a manhole where my line lived, then failed to assign it to a work crew after I reported it 3 times, and then their crews went out on strike. Five weeks without my DID. So, I transferred it to Callcentric, where it could keep my other line company.

I've been getting by just fine with DID Forwarding, and now it's all dead. On top of that, newyork.voip.ms has been acting up lately, with Ring Groups acting all flaky.

I'm hoping Callcentric doesn't exceed Verizon's downtime with this little fiasco.

Anyone got a spare tin can and string?

I can't agree more. I expected the backend to have 5/9s uptime. Call processing appears to be totally down, as failover was setup on my account to forward to cellphone. It is not doing that. I just get dead air when I call my DID. This shouldn't be happening if they are really "carrier grade".

I await their explanation for this. And I've since found that generators are NOT illegal in NYC. Just expensive.

After a great day with Callcentric we get this bad karma. Screw it. I'm opening bottle of wine and checking in the morning. Can't even trade stocks this week! Wait, is there any way to port a number from a non-functional provider??

I was just wondering the same thing. At this point I might as well port my number to an additional cell phone line. $10 a month is starting to seem like a bargain, and I can't recall the last time my cell service didn't work.

It's really incredible that Callcentric has no generator backup. Of course there is generator power in 111 Eighth Ave. and 60 Hudson. All the CLECs (Paetec, XO, Level3, even Sprint PCS) have their switch sites in these buildings. Is Vonage down in Manhattan? - no. Even Voip.ms is in a datacenter that switched to generator power.

The Callcentric DNS servers are down, and it appears even their IP routing is pretty much turned off. Traceroute to ns2.telengy.net 204.11.192.20 doesn't get very far for me from the DC area.

I've used the ones posted by CC as well as the ones automatically provided by my ISP - same difference. Currently using my ISP DNS addresses.

I have to call "Not so fast my friend." You observed 'same difference' between two of hundreds of DNS servers out there. All you've proven is those two DNS servers work OK on the Obi firmware with the settings you specified.

I have been patiently watching and following this whole DDS thing and now the lack of backup power and am coming to the conclusion that while CC has had a great run and for the most part been given high marks for service and support they are only as good as there weakest link. Other providers have failed in different ways but in the end none of the BYOD providers is without some short comings.
I will never put all my eggs in just one basket and now more then ever realize you need a backup plan if you are going to rely on VOIP.
