 | Arrested for calling 911

Awaiting the second american revolution... |
|
 | it's not the first time that someone has been arrested for making a 911 call when there was no emergency..
according to the story, the police officer warned the woman that she would be arrested if she called 911 when there was no emergency, but she did it anyway and, so, she was arrested..
incidentally, i guess the evidence shows that the police officer was, in fact, doing his job.. the woman was arrested and taken to jail.. |

I don't know how it is in England, but the police officer made the right call here. -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

 | reply to sharpy merc Meanwhile, many real criminals are out on bail before the arresting officer finishes writing up the arrest report. |

If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. a comment like that from someone who uses this tag line "If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening."
that a civil servant (read civil master thanks mr R.A.Heinlein) arrests the victim simply because she complained about his actions, c'mon the 911 call is just a BS excuse and you know it.
P.S. the only penalty in the UK is for Malious or Hoax calls too 999, so one of our cops would simply have handled it better.
the penalties are :-
anyone of the following
a) £5,000 fine ($8,100) b) 6 months in prison c) police caution d) mobile phone disconnected |

KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:7 | Remind me again how abusing the 911 system is a good idea, as well as "becoming irate" with the civil servant trying to deal with your issue. The fact that "she [claims she] saw" her wallet in her neighbor's apartment speaks more to a gray area situation a lot like a domestic dispute call where it is not clear which side is telling the truth.
The bottom line is that she didn't get the instant reaction she wanted, so she decided to call 911 to complain about something she didn't like.
Meanwhile, a house could be burning down or someone could be violently mugged because 911 is being distracted by BS calls like this one.
Regardless of what you think about this specific situation, you as a citizen do not get to call an EMERGENCY LINE to complain and whine that the responding officer decided you were full of crap.
If you really feel strongly, get his name and badge number (which will be included on the report) and write into the station about him. But again, calling an emergency line (EMERGENCY LINE) to whine is not tolerated. -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

I think that's a misreading of the situation as reported in the article. I'd say "arrested because she was behaving like an unreasonable dickhead" looks nearer the mark. So, yeah, in some sense the misuse-of-911 was just an excuse, but only in a last-straw way.
911 really is for in-progress emergencies. Reporting a past theft isn't an emergency to start with, let alone complaining that the cop that came to investigate doesn't agree with your view of the situation. |

nice sound policy that is
the cop was the dickhead someone rang 911 because they felt they had a problem and a cop who should be trained to deal with people in that situation blew it big time. |

 | reply to sharpy merc said by sharpy merc: the 911 call is just a BS excuse and you know it. She tried to force him to search her neighbor's apartment for her missing wallet. He correctly assured he that he couldn't without any evidence or a search warrant. When he refused, she called 911. He was nice enough to have warned her NOT to call 911 to complain.
He gave her good advice. When an officer (not merely a civil servant but someone charged to insure public safety) orders you to do or not to do something or else..., you'd be best served to have done your research before challenging his authority.
If she (and you) had done a little research, you'd have discovered that the crime of misusing the 911 system varies by state, with MANY including jail time of up to 6 months. Some states have increased the penalties recently due to abuse. As just an example, in Illinois it's now a felony. »www.911dispatch.com/2010/07/30/i···-felony/

It's not a chat or whinefest line. You have a complaint, go to the station and fill out a report.

+1
He didn't have the legal basis for searching her neighbor's home, and sounds like she didn't want to accept that. The newspaper report says that she saw her wallet in her neighbor's home. One can only wonder why she didn't take it back when she saw it?
She misused the 911 system; she could have just as easily gotten the regular phone number for the police dept. by calling Information instead of redialing 911.
She lists herself in Facebook as being a Nikki Minaj fan. I rest my case.... -- Patriotism is not waving a flag, it is living the ideals

Now, I grant you a better solution would have been for the cop to say "have a nice day, I've done all I'm going to do, goodbye" but I still think the consequences of dickheadery were self-inflicted. |
