 | Piggins are slim for Toronto renter with a pet hog As animal roommates go, Otis is a typical tail-wagger who loves getting his belly rubbed, is partial to peaches and Cheese Whiz (though not together) and sometimes needs to be pushed to go for a walk. But hes clean and easy to get along with.
Sure, when it comes to the food bowl, hes a pig eating anything and forever, admits his owner, Alex, a University of Toronto student whos trying to find herself and Otis an apartment.
Of course, thats because he is a pig, a type known as a micro mini pig, related to the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig.

 | will she be able to find a place....there is something here that says:
The provincial landlord and tenant laws state that any clause forbidding legal pets is not enforcable and void. |

"Torontos Municipal Code forbids the keeping of pigs of any variety within city limits, with the owner facing a fine of $240 and possible court action, which could result in another fine of up to $5,000."
So, he's not a legal pet in Toronto. In fact, by highlighting her plight she could be fined as it says he's currently living in her mother's Toronto home. |

| reply to jaberi That's no "Micro mini pig".
Bastard is pretty large. No sane landlord would rent to this crazy lady.
Perhaps she needs to trade the pig for a boyfriend, and problems will be solved. --

I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

 | reply to A Lurker Thank god we have these important municipal bylaws like this one; without it Hogtown would be overrun with a herd of pigs! Fashionable woman would be shopping with pygmy pigs in purses, owners would demand an off-lease pig park, and Rob Ford would be allowed to roam about the city unharassed by his detractors. Oh the horrors:D |

A Lurkerthat's Ms Lurker btwPremium join:2007-10-27 Burlington, ON | Hey, I don't necessarily agree with it. However the OP said landlords couldn't refuse a renter with a legal pet. Just pointing out that the original article said they weren't legal pets (even at her family home where he was currently kept). |

Just pointing out that the original article said they weren't legal pets (even at her family home where he was currently kept). True enough. Her opinion is that her wants should be met and everyone should accommodate her - the very definition of a Torontoid.
Frankly if I had the choice of renting to her, its not the pig that would make me say no. |

A Lurkerthat's Ms Lurker btwPremium join:2007-10-27 Burlington, ON | I actually can't believe a university student can afford $1200/month. I know adults looking for accomodation that have a budget lower than that. |

 | I am having difficult in believing the bit about her being a student at UofT - wow! |

I find it funny she wants to live in Toronto yet it's one of the most important things for her to have a yard her pig can graze in... umm... as someone else posted in the comment section of the star article "She comes off as not too bright." |

| reply to A Lurker If you take the guideline of 30% of your income on housing that's a "student" making 40K/yr while going to school.
Well technically depending on the "profession" should could make that. |

Actually, reading the pros and cons I think she's probably nuts for keeping the pig. |
