Are you SURE the modem is the source of the problems? Couldn't just exchange it for a better one?
I'm not saying buying your own is a bad idea, but ComCast tries to give you working equipment, and sometimes it's not the problem. Troubleshoot first, then decide on the exchange/purchase equation.
