Re: Do you consider yourself paranoid sense you visit this forum

Only a paranoid would ask that question.

The rest of us are just trying to stay ahead of any potential problems.

What do you all think ? Are we all paranoid people because we visit this forum or even read it?

Hmmm..I considered myself informed. Others, especially in my family consider me paranoid..
It's funny. I own an IPad too which isn't software FW (behind router) or AV protected but I use a windows pc or a linux live cd to do sensitive stuff. As far as a Mac is concerned, I'm more paranoid because I'm not certain of how to or if there are adequate tools for securing it properly.

That why we need to all get a Windows 8 Pro Tablet so we can install all our x86 programs on it for our security! That plus Firefox and all our addons finally on a tablet!

Internet security is the only area where paranoia ceases to be a psychiatric disorder and becomes a useful survival trait.

On the Internet, there really are people out to get you, everywhere.

Keep calm and carry on.

Speak for yourself.

Since paranoia is defined as "suspicion and mistrust of people or their actions without evidence or justification" and this forum documents evidence and justification for concern almost daily, it's a silly question.

Because the meaning of "paranoia" (irrational concern) revolves around "irrational", whether one is paranoid or not is determined by whether their concerns are rational. A few parts of the Internet world are very ugly, and there are malicious folks out there... just as there are in other areas of life. Keeping rational about one's concerns always includes keeping correctly informed about the topics of concern... both to avoid needless risks, and to avoid over-reaction to more trivial or less-likely risks. To me, that is a major purpose of security forums - to keep informed while maintaining perspective about things that affect one's security. With time and experience, what thoughts and opinions are truly "rational" in such forum threads will become clear...

Visiting this forum and keeping informed is what keeps me FROM being paranoid.

Security on computers is and always will be fluid, so it pays to try to stay ahead.

My apologies to Poe, but this topic is so delicious the words just flowed to my consciousness ...

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,

O'er many a quaint and curious piece of internet lore,

While I surfed on, sometimes gaming, suddenly my IDS is claiming,

A botnet's surely aiming, aiming at at my firewall door.

`'Tis the gummint,' I screamed, `aiming at my firewall door -
It must be this, and nothing more.'

Then my hackles came to stirring as I heard the dreaded whirring

Of a black ops copter near my door.

Then the ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,

At the grave and stern assemblage of the black ops team it bore.

Though thy agents be dressed in camo, bearing bandoliers of ammo, more than any sight I'd seen,

Ghastly grim and well-armed soldiers charging out the helo door

'Tell me what thy lordly names are on the Night's Plutonian shore!'

Quoth the soldiers, `HIT THE FLOOR!'

Your prose almost inspired me to install even a 4th AV to make sure the first three did not fail..then I remembered The Cat in the Hat.

And so deep and so tall,
We cannot pick it up.
There is no way at all!”

No, I don't think that about most members. I just figure that most people or members visit the forum because they run some version of Windows. Consequently, what other choice do they have.

The Black Helicopter, Tin-Foil Hat, and the like crowd that are the minority but still a significant number are just entertaining and feed my immature need to feel superior.
