2 wire modem swap

Can I buy a 2 wire off of ebay? and just swap? do I have to notify ATT? I know I have to enter some data in the router.

I seem to be loosing/dropping signal in my hard wired pc to my current modem and when I chatted with support, they wanted me to reset my wireless settings!

Ran some diagnostics in the router and got this:

his from the diagnostics within router:

PVC Connection: Could not find an ATM circuit

IP Connection: An Internet address could not be obtained

Looks like a legacy ADSL circuit. Any standard ADSL modem would work. AT&T does not need to know when you swap modems because authentication is done by PPPoE. You just enter the network login data, same as you did with the current modem.
