Last time I sorted through this, the instructions at Google Voice website were incomplete. I found this on the internet somewhere and it matches the GV site's instructions but with an add'l step.

Dial these (3) numbers:

*71 (then your Google Voice #, with area code)
*90 (then your Google Voice #, with area code)
*92 (then your Google Voice #, with area code)

Each number will dial and immediately disconnect as if nothing really happened.
