The sad truth is the UK is taking a page from US broadband carriers. They ALL overcharge in rural America and have - since the first byte was available to the public. Quality and knowledgeable tech support, by and large, is Big Brother's big fat lie to their adoring public.
Furthermore, it is impossible to wire the entire US from coast to coast without utilizing microwave and other technologies, and hiring the engineers to keep the systems up and running 24/7 because "the problem is leaving here just fine." 300' towers built on the side of a mountain is not an easy task, but that is what it will take. The rest can feign ignorance but Bell knows what that means; they've done in the past -- and they would like to avoid it in the future. The other option, of course, is pony up the $100for the 2/.512 pita capped satellite service.
IF you live it Chicago, NYC and LA competition is alive and well. If you don't, well, buy a large jar of Vaseline and you'll eventually get used to paying for the fancy smoke and mirror job you are actually buying.
