Realistically, no. The only time you'd need a "special" router is if you had special needs (Normally in home networking QOS and other security needs). Most routers are good and fairly easy to set up, and work well for basic needs. I'd shoot for a $70 router if you have the cash to hit a balance between customization and price.

Are there alternatives to the Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 for the 30/5 Extreme connection? It's so popular it's going for $133.95 now!

You have to follow TWC's approved modems list. If the modem isn't on their list of approved modems, they won't allow it onto the network.

As of right now, they have only approved the SB6141 and the SBG6580 as approved DOCSIS 3.0 modems.
