 | Cablevision unencrypted qam I am currently a cablevison tv and optonline customer with the family cable package. My deal ends next month and I am thinking of downgrading service. I was playing with connecting the cable directly to the back of a tv that has a qam tuner and to my surprise, not only did I receive cbs, abc, nbc but I also received usa, tnt, tbs, yes, cnn, comedy central, cartoon, disney and other channels in both HD and SD which I thought would be encrypted.
Does anyone know if I cut my tv service back to basic cable only or completely shut it down will all of the qam channels that I get now remain or would I lose them? |

 | You'll lose them no matter what. Everything above broadcast basic is going encrypted (or has already done so depending on where you live). |
|
 | At what point in the process does the decryption happen. I thought that this happened at the cable box with the card but that is obviously not the case as the channels are being sent over QAM as 1 TV has a set top box and 1 TV has the coaxial plugged directly into it getting family cable channels. |

The locals are sent in the clear over QAM, but you must be in an area that hasn't gone fully digital yet and are receiving the analog versions of the other channels. Once your area goes fully digital all you will get is broadcast basic over clear qam. |

 | reply to limegrass69 That's not the case with me. Last week when I did my second QAM scan the analog feeds of family cable got replaced by a message stating you needed boxes...but then a nice size amount of family cable and higher QAM channels got decrypted as a result. |

Nice. But, I'm guessing it's a temporary thing. |

 | We'll indeed see. Before when the analog feeds had active channels on them I was getting a small handful of Family Cable and higher channels via Clear QAM. Cablevision opening up the family cable offerings atleast as they were before they started removing the analogs via clear qam would be nice officially. |

No hidden surprises to be found there It is only the OTA channels, C-SPAN, News 12, home shopping, and PEG/leased access. One time, however, they accidentally allowed Boomerang to slip through. I only hope that brief mistake did not financially break the company... |
