[Extension] HTTPS Everywhere 3.0 final released

HTTPS Everywhere 3.0 protects 1,500 more sites
October 8, 2012 - 6:33pm | By Peter Eckersley
quote:
Today we released version 3.0 of HTTPS Everywhere, which adds encryption protection to 1,500 more websites, twice as many as previous stable releases. Our current estimate is that HTTPS Everywhere 3 should encrypt at least a hundred billion page views in the next year, and trillions of individual HTTP requests....

Thanks chazzy.
NOTE: Each time you log in to DSLR you need to go to HTTPS Everywhere options, untick the box for Broadband Reports and the "503 Request temporarily denied: too many requests arriving from your IP address." bug goes away for that session only.

No such problems here.

Strange but interesting. There's been a few of us that have commented in the Site Bugs forum about the 503 Request bug. If I don't untick Broadband Reports in Rules it's almost impossible to negotiate the forums without the bug coming up. Maybe the new version will solve the problem (for those of us that have it).

Does this make web pages load slower at all?

Try it and see. Every system and setup is different.

Is speed of more value than safety and security?

Doesn't seem to be too many people using this? Does it create any known problems (other than the one that Pentangle See Profile is reporting here on DSLR)?

I use it. The redirect problem pops up occasionally, not every time, but it sure can get annoying.

I'm trying it now, Luna. Not seeing any speed loss or any other problems either yet.

Update:

Maybe no problems or speed loss is because I'm not using the extension correctly. This sub-forum shows up at https, but other DSLR forums are showing up as only http sites.

Likewise everywhere else I go is also still showing as only http.

Many sites on the web offer some limited support for encryption over HTTPS, but make it difficult to use. For instance, they may default to unencrypted HTTP, or fill encrypted pages with links that go back to the unencrypted site. The HTTPS Everywhere extension fixes these problems by using a clever technology to rewrite requests to these sites to HTTPS.

HTTPS Everywhere can protect you only when you're using sites that support HTTPS and for which HTTPS Everywhere include a ruleset. If sites you use don't support HTTPS, ask the site operators to add it; only the site operator is able to enable HTTPS. There is more information and instruction on how server operators can do that in the EFF article How to Deploy HTTPS Correctly.

Got that, but why would this be the only DSLR page that I see is encrypted when using the extension?

All the other DSLR sub-forums I've visited since adding the extension still show the pages to be unencrypted. Like the ForSale, Microsoft, and main Software forums. All of those appear here to remain unencrypted.

Seems like it works differently for different people ?
For me , everything shows as secure , except for the front page of each forum . Topics show as secure , but not the front page .
Wonder if it has anything to do with using secure log in rather than regular ?

Https: on dslreports is not a supported functoin, so this extension does the best it can.

Hello chachazz,

I am running FF 18 b4 with HTTPS Everywhere version 3.0.
Hitting the download link you gave in your post to get version 3.1, I got the following error message:

"Error occurred during communication to www.eff.org:

Cannot communicate securily with peers: No common encryption algorithm.

Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap"

Any suggestion? Thank you.

Changed options in encryption?
Changed proxy settings?
Try starting Firefox in safe mode and see....

Have never experienced that issue with HTTPS Everywhere.
