There's no real way to determine what caused the issue, as there's a wide range of things that could do that. Something like maintenance work or an outage in your area could have caused issues, and required the modem to reboot afterward to fully resolve it. The modem itself could be having issues, there's really no way to determine now what the problem was.

If you ever do experience speed issues, rebooting the modem is always a good idea. I would recommend doing it maybe once a month to make sure the modem has gotten all of the updates it might require. Some updates cause the modem to reboot, others will happen after a reboot occurs.
