Turbo should give more than 14 mbs down/2 mbs up. IMHO.

Being new to cable connections, I'm just wondering if it's because the bundled modem/router (Motorola SBG6580) and if there're things I can do to get the most out of my connection.

Also now that TWC is charging us for modem rental, I figured I'll look into equipment upgrade.

Instead of focusing on the 30Mb/sec, focus on other features - is it 802.11n? Does it support simultaneous dual-band? Do you need dual band? Do you really need to spend money on a router that somebody has tried to shove every conceivable technology into (USB ports, bittorrent clients, etc, etc)?

For me, I recently picked up two Belkin N600 HD+ routers (they routinely go for ~$30 now). It has simultaneous dual-band 802.11n, all ports are gigabit, and I can push 88Mb/sec through it WAN/LAN. Those were the important factors for me. I run third-party tomato firmware on it, so I can't comment on the stock firmware, but I'm sure it's fine.

If you still have the WNDR3700, I see no need to get something new.

When I plugged this unit in it went right to 30 -31 MBits, connected via wireless. I could put DD-WRT or Tomato on it but honestly, the factory firmware is great and does everything the open source ones do afaik. It also seems to get updated by ASUS on a monthly basis.

Depending on what version of that router you have, you can flash opensource firmware to it. Not sure about Tomato, (previously mentioned by trparky ), but I just recently flashed a WNDR3700 with Gargoyle (based on OpenWRT)

The WNDR3700 also has builds of DD-WRT available, as well.

So if you're looking to breathe life into your old router, you could use one of those...but the WNDR3700 stock firmware is perfectly capable for your 30/5 connection.

As of right now, they have only approved the SB6141 and the SBG6580 as approved DOCSIS 3.0 modems.

Fleeced posted : Realistically, no. The only time you'd need a "special" router is if you had special needs (Normally in home networking QOS and other security needs). Most routers are good and fairly easy to set up, and work well for basic needs. I'd shoot for a $70 router if you have the cash to hit a balance between customization and price.

Only bad part of the TomatoUSB build that I loaded is that it doesn't have drivers for the 5 GHz card in it so I only have 2.4 GHz WiFi but that doesn't bother me too much. The added firmware capabilities more than makes up for the lack of 5 GHz WiFi.
