2821 Noise

Anyone with a 2821 router, can you comment on the noise level of the fans? interested to know.

You can check the Cisco website for the db level. Regardless I recalled that a 2821 could be quite noisy, not something you would want to keep in a bedroom or living room

I usually prefer something fanless or the like such as 1800 series, ASA 5505, or Juniper SRX 210 for home lab equipment. You can still do a lot of things with those while keeping noise level down

yea i have an 1841 that handles my cable connection but doing basic CBAC configs makes the CPU spike to around 93% doing 30mbps. I was considering a 1921 as well as the 2821 but the going rate on Fleabay for the 1921 with a security license is rather expensive since its newer.

Thanks for the insight though =)

If I were you, I rather go with Juniper SRX 100 or 210 than 2821 router since they are smaller, consume less power, fanless, more powerful/functional, requires no license for most networking need, and probably about the same or cheaper price

ive worked on junipers for customers at work... the config syntax was a pain in the butt.... but they are pretty nifty devices for what they offer.

JUNOS just like IOS is just another operating system. Once you get used to it, I'm sure you'll like

Yeah, for most people the noise of the 2821's fans will be too annoying. Some years back I had an old 2900xl switch as my main switch in my home office, and my wife constantly was telling me I left my computer on due to the fan noise of the switch.

So, unless you have a SO that will be annoyed by it, the fact that you have an 1841 as your main router (me too!) currently tells me you like to mess with Cisco gear, so.... you may not fall into the category of most people and won't mind the drone of the fans

Think of having the 2821 somewhat akin to having a hotrod PC with some louder fans on all the time. I say go with it man!

I'm used to working in equipment rooms with lots of fans so I like having lots of blinky lights around and the sound of fans going is a pleasant white noise to me. My wife does not share this opinion. She deals with it though as my job pays the bills, heh heh.

I have a 2821 and I have to say that it is very quiet. I once left it on for a couple of days because it simply didnt bother me and I "forgot" about it.

The fans are largeish, so dont spin very fast, and hence dont create a lot of noise. What noise they do create is low pitched, so its less irritating.

It is quite noisy when you first turn it on though, until it boots and it realises that it doesnt need quite as much fan speed.
