Star Citizen

Wing Commander series creator Chris Roberts is returning to the PC gaming business. He is currently working on a game called STAR CITIZEN, a PC exclusive developed in CryEngine 3. It'll be pretty!

Developed in CryEngine 3, Star Citizen is at least two years out from release and is being designed for advanced hardware, the results of which are already stunning; A small, pre-alpha demo showcased ships with hundreds of individual parts, all of which contributed to the physics driving its movement. On top of looking like something out of a current game’s cinematic, each ship has an exceedingly realistic damage model, allowing players to damage each component and have it dynamically affect a ship’s performance.

We haven't had a good space sim since FreeeSpace 2. And now the creator of one of the greatest space sims of all time is working on one.

All I need on top of that is Homeworld 3 and I can retire on the moon with these two games forever.

Also awesome:

For all the beauty Roberts longs to bring to the Star Citizen universe, he also wants it to represent life – which is to say it’ll feature a truly ugly side as well. Travel outside of the heavily governed areas and you’ll find yourself without police protection. Journey out into space in search of treasure or to do a quest and another player might just decide to gang up on you with his friends. When pitched a scenario where me and my friend are piloting a freighter, Roberts said the plan is for it to be entirely possible to have one person flying while the other runs around in the ship to man stations and turrets – like the freaking Millenium Falcon. If things go way south and, say, the attackers want to take your ship, they can board you and it can come down to shooting it out, gun in hand, just like a first-person shooter.

FreeLancer was a 3rd person space combat arcade game. Wing Commnader war cockpit-view and much more akin to a flight sim than an arcade style-game.

You meant FreeSpace 3 maybe?

If so, it looks like it may be it.

Yeah Freespace 3, I loved the Freelancer game too.

This will be first day pre-order.

Sounds like a cool idea. Hope they can make it into a reality. That is the way I always dreamed of space sims to work.

I never got into the Wing Commander series, but have loved space flight sims since I was a kid. Freespace 2 and Tie Fighter are my personal favorites. It would be nice if this revitalized the genre.

I think space sims peaked at Defender II.

Joking aside, it sounds interesting. It has been a while since I have played a space sim, so I might check it out if/when it launches. The space flight missions in SWTOR just didn't cut it for me.

I don't have much experience with space flight games except for Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom. I LOVED that freaking game and put many hours into it. Luke Skywalker and Biff Tannon vs. big cats flying spaceships. "Chalk up another for the Maniac!" - good memories.

Anyhow yeah I will be more than happy to give this game a chance.

That was Biff as the Maniac?

I know that Luke was in that game though.

Sure was, and Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Tolwyn. Gimli was one of the Senators too.

Never knew that and I think I have WC4 somewhere.

I guess Biff musta borrowed the Delorean and became a fighter pilot sometime in the future. =)

Well there is this going on to help out...

Then there is some artwork floating around,

And finally if no one has seen it, a 5 minute video showing off IN GAME footage

There is supposedly a longer video from Comic-Con or something like it floating around.

And yes, if you cant tell I am excited to see this coming back around. Chris Roberts was a god to me when I first got into PC gaming. Until Luke...I mean Mark Hamill became the lead actor in the live action parts.

The X series is much more of a strategy game rather than a combat sim

Disagree, combat is an essential part of the X Series, though I suppose the game is flexible enough though that it can be entirely avoided. The number/variety of player-flyable ships is the great strength of the game, one can choose to fly the smallest fighter to the largest capital ship. If Star Citizen keeps me locked in a fighter for the whole game, I won't buy it.

Kickstarter campaign is up

We have investors that have agreed to contribute the balance we need to complete this game as long as we can validate that there is a demand for a high end PC space game. By meeting or surpassing our target on Kickstarter you tell the world that you want a PC based Space Sim and allow us to make this game.

Bounty Hunter pledge from me.

Kinda sucks there's nothing between $60 and $125. IMO most distributors have the price right with an $80 digital deluxe option (even if the included bonuses suck), it is a nice sweet spot under $100, but more than basic retail.

My first Kickstarter contribution. I'm intrigued. And a alpha/beta/game for $30 isn't too shabby either. Sounds like the timing will be just about right for me to build a new rig so that will work out well also! My i9 and GTX700 series card will rock this game.

They have 4 backers at $10,000. That's just insane. Sorry, if I put in $10,000, we'd better be talking stock options not USB sticks and 10" model space ships. lol

That's usually companies or website that do it, and a lot of them get help from their users. One tech site did a 'help us reach $10,000 to get an inn named after us' fund in Project Eternity from what I remember.

I've tried looking around and had trouble finding it... will this be a pay2play or free2play with paid content? I'm confused about those galactic credits.
