So after you've checked that and if it's not the problem, I'd look at the IP of the server. Is it on the same subnet as the IP the Actiontec is giving you?

Then we'd have to start looking at the type of VPN. PPTP, L2TP, IPSEC (Transport mode? Tunnel mode?), SSL? Is it set up for split tunneling or dedicated? And what type of file server? Windows share? NFS?
