I wouldn't worry about it Horse. Unless its a server you use all the time and its causing you problems i wouldn't sweat it. Like i said before these speed and ping test sites are not always accurate and without a trace route you can never tell how far you are traveling to any IP. Its not always the most direct route even to the closest of servers....routing can always change for various reasons (ie maintenance etc). Also it could be an issue server side...there several variables that can cause an issue.

Nope. It's the same IP you listed and traced a couple pages back. It's the IP for www.pingtest.net which seems to be based out of Seattle, WA. Its not hosted and has nothing to do with the server in Columbia SC you tested earlier. You would need the IP for the SC server to diagnose it...which i dont know how to obtain since its not listed on the pingtest site.

According to that trace you go from (Charter's network) Anderson -> Greenville -> Spartanburg -> Atlanta -> Atlanta backbone(doesnt belong to Charter from here out) ->Then im guessing to the server in Columbia SC. A lot of the traffic in the SE goes through Atlanta 1st in Charter's network before being routed to the web it seems. This is not always the case though.

Get the free software gvilledsl suggested called "pingplotter" and post a trace of the IP address for each of those servers.

I dont know how to run the tracer route but i do know that my ping is spiking very high to a number of servers across the US. Usually happens around 6pm - midnight every night. Ive tried to call tech support but they cant seem to do anything for me expect waste an hour of my time going through the same steps over and over again. And when charter sends out a technician, he usually shows up around 10am when theres no traffic and my ping/speeds are fine.

If you are having problems loading web pages that could be a DNS server issue. You can always switch from Charter's DNS to someone like OpenDNS which is free.

I should not have to do that and prefer to let Charter know. Assuming I have an issue? I don't know yet judging from those tracerts. I decided to go ahead and open a thread in Direct. It can't hurt since this has been happening for a few weeks now.

Thanks. I was just told the same in Direct pretty much. Everything appears to be fine on Charters end. I was advised to test with out my router and see what happens. I will do that later.

Could you explain how to switch DNS on Windows XP?

I know you go to network connections, then Local Area connection and then select internet protocol properties, but I am fuzzy after that.

It's 12am and I'm still lagging... its actually worse now because my connection is timing out along with the lag. "intermittent connection"

Is there anything I can do on my end besides calling it in or getting a tech to come out during "non-peak" hours?

Please help.

crap, I just signed up for Charter 30Mbps plan, will install next friday. I live in San Gabriel, and this test result is pretty bad, not the speed but the ping... 500 ping can't do any gaming and web page will act funny with that much lag.
So is it just the local node is overloaded or something else?

I also have this problem during peak. I believe some nodes are just congested now that everyone's upgraded to 30mbits as the baseline.....remember there's only around 160mbit across 4 bonded channels.....

Hey - I'm in Greenville and I've been having the same problems for the last week or so - in the evenings around 7 or 8 it seems to go through a very slow or no connectivity period. Later it seems to return to normal. I've tried resetting my equipment and it doesn't seem to be correlated to when the problem goes away i.e. sometimes it fixes it, sometimes after multiple times the problem is still there. I originally thought it was a DNS problem and switched to OpenDNS, but that wasn't it. Just posting to raise attention to the Greenville area again.

I dont know if its the node being overloaded but it seems like it. the lag starts about 6pm and can sometimes go on until 1-2am EVERYNIGHT.

If you're new to the San Gabriel valley and have charter, theres a charter office located on valley blvd and almansor rd. Its in a shopping center behind BIG 5. Trust me when i say you'll probably be visiting often.

Airwrench.. I'm up the road from you in Inman, SC. What have you found out so far on your problem? I had techs out this past Saturday. They replaced a line and splitter in my house. All my signal levels are within range, but like you, my connection was laggy and slow during the evening hours. During the day, it's fine.

I'm up in the high desert near Victorville and it been 4 days that I notice I get slow speed from 8pm till 10pm. Prior to that I haven't had any issues. They have sent a tech out, all he did was replaced some connectors, then they put in a new line from the street and now a new modem.

Previously I had fairly high latency times and pings.

Lately this is what I have found.
