Best router under $50?

I've read through most of the thread, but I'm looking for something in the $50 range if possible. I'm looking for something that will work as well or better than the Netgear wireless cablemodem gateway I have now. I got a Linksys E900 for $40 but I can't actually try it out until I get a modem. Anyone have any thoughts or recomendations?

Why not? Which modem do you have now? Depending on the model I can bridge it and you are good to go.

I don't have a modem I have a Netgear CGD24G that you told me can't be bridged.

Ah yes thank you for reminding me....you are correct BUT I can put you into a modem that will work if you want.

I might try plugging it in anyway since it uses .1.1 instead of .0.1
Just to see how the wireless performs. I want to be sure the router isn't going to give me issues before I commit to it.

No problem but understand you will be running double NAT which can cause all sorts of odd behavior.

I mainly wanted to test the wireless signal strength . Currently the gateway and my pc are nearly at opposite ends of the house and I want to be sure I have a solid connection.

I got a WNDR3700 for $50 and an E2500 for $28 both on eBay. It's pretty much the best to find a good deal.

You paid too much for the wndr3700.... When it first released the product was great....subsequent firmware releases hopelessly broke that router to the extent that nobody wants it....it never recovered unfortunately...

Hmm, it's actually giving me better reception than anything I've used and I'm not sure what specifically would be wrong with the firmware (this is a v2 btw)

It was also hardware revision driven.....you may be a lucky one but there are many who really hate that device and they didn't start off this way myself included. This is a common issue with Netgear and especially Dlink....and certain models. In the case of the wndr3700 it was so bad they rebranded the model but in some freakish twist decided to leave the old model number on the box as though folks would simply overlook the reputation of that model. Despite their best efforts it really never recovered. Consumers are smarter than that...well most of them anyway.

You mentioned TP-Link to me when we spoke on the phone, is there a particular model I should look at? I was considering getting a Netgear WNR2000 if the Linksys E900 doesn't work out but if Netgear not any good then I'll avoid it.
