[CritEditY] To alter or not?I posted this shot to my Gallery, and one of the comments was to change it by "a horizontal rotation, which will make the bird the first thing a viewer will focus on, rather than the feeder." » i.dslr.net/pics_cache/16 ··· e29c.jpgWhile i found that the size of the Hummingbird and the feeder an integral part of the whole, I have wondered what it might look like changed and played with it myself. How would you all work with this image...or would you? |

I honestly didn't even notice the feeder until I read your post. That bird grabbed me immediately. Wonderful shot. I love hummingbirds. One of those amazing things God scatters here and there just to see if we're paying attention. Like zebras and the color purple. |

In the edited one the feeder looks like a leg wearing red slippers that has white eyes and is sticking out its bottom lip. Very large, distracting, overpowering and eye catching. IMO the feeder in the original doesn't distract from the subject, the bird. |

jaykaykay your photo would make a good photo to sell birdfeeders. If you want to make the photo about the bird you need to downplay the feeder or not have it in the photo. Your photo sends conflicting signals as it is seen in the gallery, tho it is clearly more about the feeder, my eye bounces back and forth with no where to rest. Our eyes go first to light or bright colors. We usually look for something whole in a photo first or cropped in a pleasing place. With the version you posted here we know it is about the bird as the feeder is not whole. My opinion and I hope you find this helpful. |

I like it how it is, the mountain stood out more than the feeder (at least to me). |

The mountain is blurred, so we know the photo is not about the mountain. Both feeder and bird are sharp in the original post making it hard to figure out if the photo is about the feeder or the bird. |

Not really a standard size, but cropping out most of the negative space works for me. Of course if you are talking about framing this, it may not work. |

To me, the photo is about the bird and the feeder. Not about one or the other. You could call it "On Approach". |

I still prefer the original post. And as to the main subject being either the bird or feeder, it's about both as Jodokast96 suggested.
If the feeder were a flower instead, would anyone be asking "is it about the bird or the flower?" Probably not, so why should a feeder raise the question? The bird is doing what the bird does best.....feeding. So the feeder is an integral part of the image. |

In the original photo posted it was titled Hummer 1. In order to make the photo just about the hummer as the title implies, something needs to be done about the feeder, or change the title. My opinion |

Again I agree, it was the title that makes the photo confusing.
Flowers are a part of nature so we associate the two together more than we do a man-made feeder. |

Rotated |
Since I'm the viewer who suggested the original idea (horizontal rotation) maybe you should see what I mean. |

Thank you all. I have found something in each statement to consider for future such images. And I did get a few more shots that eventually will go in my Gallery. These little feathered friends are not the easiest for me to capture, so I will definitely consider what's been said. |
