 | [WildBlue] Faster Than Advertised Since October 10, 2012, I have noticed my speed on Wildblue Value Pack sometimes exceeding 1 Mb/s while it is supposed to be up to 512 kb/s. The following screen capture of Task Manager's Network graph taken about 30 minutes ago proves the excessive speed. Each horizontal line represents 320 kb/s. Oldest time is on the left and most recent time is on the right. The highest spike is about 1.7 Mb/s.

These variable speeds are causing havoc with me managing my usage. For example, I watched a video on hulu and forgot to set the quality to the lowest value for the first 15 minutes. Hulu automatically set the speed to 1 Mb/s and Wildblue transferred at that speed. When video quality at hulu is normally on auto, the video runs and pauses reminding me to set it to the lowest quality. In this case the video played smoothly and more than 100 MB of data was streamed before I noticed the unusually high speed. After I set it to the lowest quality, the show played as expected but the commercials automatically played at over 1 Mb/s. Frustration caused by variable speed and low usage caps.
Has anyone else detected this behavior?
Has Wildblue decided to give legacy customers faster speeds? . -- Wildblue Value Pack, beam 31, Riverside gateway |

About six years ago, one of their server (or whatever) updates caused even higher download speed, but it was quickly corrected. |

 | In the past I have seen my speeds operate at Select and Pro Pack speeds for a few hours on several occasions. These high speeds have been occurring for the last 4 days. Today an Adobe Flash video downloaded with the speed of Pro Pack with some spikes above 2 Mb/s.
One of the reasons I will not get Exede is because I do not want high speed with a low usage cap. Wildblue is shoving it down my throat anyhow -- Wildblue Value Pack, beam 31, Riverside gateway |

 | reply to Spice300 said by Spice300:I do not want high speed with a low usage cap Don't use video on hulu much, but I have Youtube "trained" at 360p rate.
High speed is not an issue for me. When I was using 32" LCD full time, I used an odd-ball screen resolution, and a number of video sites used lowered speed rate. If I used its native resolution, video sites sometimes upped video rate to HD |

Re: [WildBlue] Faster Than Advertised Yesterday, I was unable to set a video at YouTube to 240p even though it allowed that option to be selected. It insisted on 360p. |

 | reply to Spice300 I downloaded an 80 MB file and received speeds similar to Select Pack until the Network Management policy activated decreasing the speed to under 256 kb/s. This was downloaded between 1 pm and 2 pm. Each horizontal line represents 512 kb/s.

Note - I use Flashblock so this prevents video from running. I downloaded that program, and one can set the video rate when it is downloaded. |
|
 | I am using Firefox's Ad Block Plus to minimize Adobe Flash content.
The highest spike in download speed that I have seen on Task Manager's Network Monitor has been 9 Mb/s. Early this morning some data downloaded at a sustained rate of about 3 Mb/s. The upgrade at increased price to the Surfbeam 2 equipment seems unnecessary because the legacy Wildblue equipment is fully capable of speeds close to the up to 5 Mb/s of Exede-5. Incorrect Spice....Engineering Strikes Again....Marketing would never give you more for less or the same |
|
 | Marketing sold those who switched to Exede a Surfbeam 2 modem, TRIA and truckroll for an activation fee and about $10 / month more than the legacy system. Based on my speeds over the last 2 weeks, the legacy Wildblue equipment is fully capable of a download speed between 3 Mb/s and 5 Mb/s. The equipment did not need to be changed. | said by Spice300: DrSL, did you really need to get Exede-5? Previous Anik F2 spot beam I used was loaded, or my TRIA was shooting craps or dish not aligned (Skew was never set on it, btw); I knew ahead of time which spot beam I would be put on, WB-1: 163, and I knew WB-1:113 (WB Legacy) had never been filled completely.
Monthly price is the same (no monthly equipment charge, and 2 year fix free warranty), and install was less than $100.00.
It was a no brainer, upgrade...17 months left on contract
Sooner or later, your TRIA will shoot craps....I've got a power brick, modem, and know where there is a left polarized TRIA that has not been used in years, btw. |
|
 | Mmm, replacement parts.
I think the lifetime of Anik-F2 is about 15 years, until 2020, so my equipment only needs to last longer than the satellite. |

 | reply to Spice300 I've seen around 600Kbps, but rarely. Right before Exede went live, best average was around 200Kbps, and often "locked up". Service has improved a fair amount since then on legacy. It was unusable during primetime hours.
Exede5 service here is still not great, doesn't perform well, and it has been shut down to new customers for quite a while.

 | said by stinkyboots :I've seen around 600Kbps, I suspect, for a long time, Spice has been on a sparsely populated beam. There were/are a number of beams in western states that were never filled to capacity on legacy Wildblue; when WB-1 went live, some beams were never activated, and others out west were lightly filled.
I wanted to switch to WB-1, but my provider said NO back then...so, I sat on a fairly loaded legacy beam. |
|
 | reply to stinkyboots Since you are not seeing above advertised speed on your legacy Wildblue system, then Wildblue is probably experimenting at the Riverside gateway.
If you are reading this Wildblue, my Internet has been severely timing out and yielding partial pages loads since I logged on yesterday. It is continuing today. Nearly half of every page I try to load fails. Some things will not load after 20 tries. It behaves like your gateway is congested, but there is no packet loss. When something downloads, the speeds are still above 512 kb/s. Upon power on, the modem has no problem connecting to the gateway. When waiting for a page to load, there is a long delay on the Tx light (no blinking for more than 8 seconds), then one blink and Firefox reports "The connection was reset" or something like, "can not display image because it contains errors." My guess is that the DAMA scheduler is not seeing any data to transfer so it goes idle.
