Re: Lawn care regimen

I usually cut it short (1.5" - 2") during the spring, then leave it longer once dryer weather sets in. I fertilize it no more than twice -- once during fall and once during spring.

Don't cut cold season grasses so short, it weakens the plant since you are cutting off too much of it's leaf blade. You also allow weed plants to propagate easier.

My lawn care regimen:

1. Apply rainwater (by others).
2. Mow as often as once a week, or as little as when wife complains about grass being too long.
3. If no rain, mow less. Just don't forget to water the flowers or there will be hell to pay.
4. Get mower blade sharpened in winter.
5. Rake excess leaves in autumn.

Very similar regime except for number 5.
5) Shred leaves with mower as required. Let shredded leaves lay on the lawn to disintegrate and replenish the soil over winter.

One thing about lawn fertilizer. About 2 years ago all "LAWN" fertilizer can not contain Phosphorous, just like detergent for dishwashers. The EPA has pushed this to keep Phosphorous out of the nations water supply. But if your looking for fertilizer like 10-10-10, there's company's that can still sell it legally, but it can't be labeled for lawns or grass, but can be labeled for garden and other uses. There's good benefits of Phosphorous in fertilizer applied to lawns. »www.garden-counselor-lawn-care.c···ers.html

They are increasingly being phased out, but you can still buy lawn fertilizers with it. Many of the Scotts Turf Builder formulas still have 1-2%. The good news about this is that most lawns do not need much or any, anyway.

The effects of phosphates on our lakes and rivers is more than disturbing. Phosphates are not banned from fertilizer around here and the lakes are worse than in the 70s. All it takes is one rain and some wind and the shores foam up like a sink full of dish water. Toxic algae blooms seem to happen each year for the past few years. The lake bottom, once clean, is now covered in slime.
When I needed some fertilizer, I had a local ag depot blend up some zero P for me.

A little bonemeal can fix the phosphorous problem.

Having the correct pH can also help with the weeds not being so bad.

You shouldn't need to put lime down every year. Once you get the pH correct, it should last 5-7 years, according to our AG agent here.

The exception would be if you have a grove of pine trees out back. Then all bets are off.

you have the same regimen as myself... I sometimes wish that my lawn would die. I live in a neighborhood that was a swamp drained in the 1950s, the ground is always wet so even in a drought my lawn grows, so no rest from the mowing!
