Frequent DCs or lag spikes

Hello!

Been a Rogers customer for awhile now, of course not too happy with their service... but with parents who want to stick with Rogers, not much choice. :/

Anywho, they have or had a 80% discount for internet going, and my Dad hopped on it... which is fine by me I guess. But since the upgrade to Ultimate and the new modem/router... I've constantly been getting DC'd or lag. I'm pretty sure it's the router or Rogers recently.

So I'm unsure what my next step is? Should I call Rogers tech to see what's up? Switch routers if I can? I can't play any online game for long without DCing in the middle of no where.

I'll give info you need regarding hardware if required.

Help?

Some modems are more prone to this kind of problem solvable with a firmware upgrade ... but yours isn't one of them.

Are you using another router behind the SMC modem? If so, try plugging in your computer directly into the SMC modem and see if the problem persists. You're basically trying to eliminate the problem on your end.

If you are plugged into the SMC modem directly, I suggest you call Rogers technical support as most likely the problem is with your modem or on their end. Make sure the tech rep checks the line stats and the logs on the modem.

1 edit

There's no router attached to the modem at all. There's only 2 computers that have wireless access, and those are it. I shouldn't need a router for just 2 computers.

And I've also noticed I get DC'd and kicked off the network if the other computer connects to the internet.

This is seriously annoying.

EDIT: I also have my own modem/router here... Would I be able to swap out the modem/router Rogers gave me, and put in my own? Or perhaps turn the modem/router wireless off, and set it to modem only, and use my router?

You dYou do need a router even for 2 computers. The modem Rogers gave you has an inbuilt router ... a not very GOOD one at that.

You can't swap the Rogers supplied modem for another. The modems are identified by a MAC built into them.

So would I be able to turn the router into a modem myself and link the router I have into it and have it work that way? I can't connect directly to the router, because I'm on the other side of the house. :P

To achieve what you want: This is what a member posted in another thread. He has the Hitron. Your SMCD3GN is made by the same manufacturer.

If you are having this issue, here's how I fixed it:

1. Get a decent wireless wi-fi router. I recommend the Netgear R6300, but feel free to substitute your favourite here.
2. Make sure your Hitron CGN2 is turned on and connected to the Internet
3. Call Rogers, navigate to the live tech support for Internet, and ask the tech to switch your gateway to bridge mode only (apparently this option is not available to you via the admin GUI). This will disable the wi-fi and routing features of the gateway. Your gateway will reboot and reconnect to the Internet.
4. Plug the Internet port on your router from step #1 into port 1 of the CGN2. Make sure that your router is on.
5. Power cycle the CGN2 by pulling out the adapter, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.
6. Run the setup on your router. It will reconfigure the WAN portion and should keep all of your current wireless settings.

Alright, thank you! Will try it later this week when I have time.
