Problem Found with Commercial Electric LED PAR Retrofit

Commercial Electric Socket adapter

A few weeks ago, I posted that one of the LED lights in my soffets had failed after just a few hours. This type of failure usually would be attributed to a component in an electronic ballast. However, I replaced the lamp today and discovered that the socket adapter that it comes with, fell apart. How this didn't manifest itself immediately, is perplexing, since there was nothing to cause mechanical movement after the installation, and it was working for several months time, adding up to a total of about 3 hours cumulative use. Then one evening last summer, the lamp would not illuminate. A real head-scratcher.

My guess is that it was "hanging on by a thread" and over the time the thermal cycles and vibrations eventually caused it to let go.

Also, this has been said on this forum many times and I'll say it again: Commercial Electric products are terrible quality.

Upon closer inspection, it looks to be a pop rivet that wasn't properly formed. I'm guessing the twist of the wire, pulling on the rivet for months. This is one of those rare cases where installation stresses were just shy of the threshold of breakage.
Otherwise, the unit is fine. I replaced the rivet with a 4-40 screw and washers and tested the lamp.
Needless to say, I'm not happy about the day spent building scaffolding just to reach the lamp fixture under a soffet 20' up.

A ladder would have been a whole lot faster to just reach 20 ft. Lights mounted high are always a pain to reach.

Not for someone my age with Parkinson's. I needed two hands to work on this. First had to cut away the rubber caulk around the bezel. And it's a deep overhang, so the lamp is a few feet away from the ext wall. This was the safest way for me to do this.
