[HSI] Two Accounts, Two Modems, same address?I am currently moving to a new home shared with a small studio apartment in the rear. They both use the same billing address and currently the rear unit has HSI/TV installed. We called Charter to setup an account but they said this address is already being used and would have to be cancelled before starting new service. Would it be possible to have Charter install a separate modem & account in the unit I am moving into and possibly run new RG11/RG6 from the node? Could anyone give any tips on what to say to CSR to get this accomplished with the least hassle?
Thanks! |

Contact the Charter Direct guys. There should be a way to setup the address as multi unit (apt 1, apt 2) in thier system. |

Well talk to people in Back, this is one time where you could share without breaking the TOS it might seem.
Otherwise, Both units should have different mailing addresses and if the other unit is using your mailing address then cancel his sevice and change it to your own. Tell him first to change his service to his own address otherwise it will be cut off. |

It'll boil down to the fact that if this is a multi dwelling unit, you need to have the apartment have an apartment number on it. We can't have 2 open accounts for the same address. If the apartment is attached to your unit and if the neighbor is nice enough, you could ask them to add a 2nd internet line to their account and the tech could run a wire into your home and a 2nd modem could be provisioned on the account but it would depend on your neighbors giving you the ok and you wouldn't get a promo rate either, you'd be paying the full $49.99 for the 30mb service, plus the bill would be in their name. |

Why not? The "phone company" has been able to do this for years, even mixing business and residential accounts at the same address. How does that work if I want to get Charter business for a legitimate contracting business that I run out of my home? I pay a metric crapload of money to rent 3 rack units of space at a local networking/programming sweatshop and I'd gladly pay Charter what they want for the convenience of having the machines within arms reach, static IP and still segregating my networks. Are you saying they are unwilling to take my money because of some billing system rule? |

Seems simple enough. Put a small 1 by the front door and a small 2 by the back door. |

I belive the reasoning behind it is in the offchance you ever got Charter phone and E911, there can't be two open accounts at the same address as your information wouldn't be transferred properly to 911 so I think to streamline things, they set it up so that it can't be listed as the same address if it's a multi dwelling unit, it has to have the marker to identify which unit you live in. Also with the tv traps and all that out on the line it would probably cause confusion also. Have you called in to ask if they could setup an account for you at that address but have it marked as unit A or something? |

Most likely what has happen here is this.
The Home owner was renting out the apartment in back and gave them internet and maybe TV service from the home owner account.
When the Home was sold and the home owner moved out the people in back called charter and had the account changed into there name to be able to keep service.
So it is not clear if you also bought that apartment in back or if it was split off from the main house so the main house could be sold separately.
Either way the apartment in back should have a different mailing address and its charter account should be using it own address not yours. Do you and the house in back share the same mailbox also ? or share utilities charges ? I would think not. |
