Re: Steam for linux: Beta on Ubuntu 12.04

said by EUS:

I could've helped my case if I actually ran Ubuntu instead of Debian.
But that ain't gonna happen.

Maybe... I've been bouncing around the Steam thread and I think a couple of people with non-Ubuntu distros got legit invites.

Anyone else here access the beta?

I managed to access the client and install a few games, I've only tried Serious Sam 3 thus far without much success.

Running the new Nvidia 310 driver...

So are you in the beta, and if not, how'd you get the client?

More comments about specific games here:

Full Disclosure:

I'm taking my chances with getting possible repercussions. (eg: a ban, termporary or permanent)

At the rate where Ubuntu non-beta members are accessing this, I don't think it'll be an issue, but there is still that remote possiblity.

Nice, if I had a spare box, I would try it too.

My game rig is an i7, dual boot.
I finally have linux installed and running the way I want, and more importantly the way the wife and kids want, so I'm not installing beta software on it....
However, I just installed a 3tb drive, so a triple boot scenario is possible......Hmmm a new weekend project?

I was assuming you weren't running Ubuntu, so I was going to mention that some folks got it runnning on Arch and Debian as well.

Oh distro. As mentioned elsewhere, Debian is all I know how to run. I don't like ubuntu, but I do like it as a live cd when I screw something up and need to chroot.

It's still very rough around the edges, although most people have posted good results... if anyone can get it running on Debian I'm sure you'd be it.

Good Luck, and post your thoughts back.

LOL, I was pretty ecstatic, this is my first beta invite, ever.

Have you been using it without the invite? The consensus I got from reading the steam community area, was that this invite went out to a lot of the people using the beta without an invite.

No, I have not tried the workaround.
I might.

I was pretty impressed with Serious Sam 3 and Amnesia's performance if that's any indicator.

I know both of these are already Linux games, but I'm still pretty impressed with the results.

Just a FYI: I was given an invite this week as well, after reading the steam boards people have the beta running on Debian well as Fedora.

I had a bit of a time getting Killing Floor running, after using the scripts to install the video driver from Ubuntu Extreme web site I am running full resolution openGL.

I just got the invite last week. I haven't had time to play with it too much, but the one game I did play worked very well.

I'm finding the library of games to be a bit lackluster, considering how many games are on Desura and the fact that Gameolith has more titles then Steam.

If they can get the back catalog by the time they go live and start getting all the old games that work in DOSBox on there maybe they can get more traction, till then the in house titles are the only reason to bother.

As it's still in beta, I'm hoping that is the plan for final publish. To have all titles running on linux.

That is the plan, AFAIK... I'd like them to start by making all of their steamplay games available so I could start playing BL2 on Ubuntu

Anyone have a link, or know the requirements to get something like TFC2 going?
Specifically video drivers. I'm currently running 64bit distro with nvidia GPU & nouveau drivers.
*EDIT* NM, I see there's a linux forum at steam.

I just installed Steam Beta on Fedora 17 x86_64. I used a Steam repo created by Tom 'spot' Callaway linked here:

»spot.fedorapeople.org/steam/

Seems to be working fine, although download speeds seem to be currently terrible. I'm guessing the Linux mirrors are not as robust as the Windows and Mac mirrors yet. As soon as Team Fortress 2 completes downloading I'll give it a spin and report back.

I Finally got it installed onto one of my linux computers .. (here at work).. installed TFC2.. but i got one of those wonderful errors about video drivers.. Now hunting for the 304.48 video driver on this older card and see if i can get the game up and running.. If it works, i've got a lot of work to do this long weekend at my house.. Installing U:12.04.. upgrading my system and then installing Steam..

Hopefully it will all work and i will be playing games on Saturday afternoon..

If you open up System Settings->Additional Drivers you should be able to install newer drivers than what is installed by default. That's how I did it in Ubuntu 12.04 with my nvidia card.

Yeah i upgraded to the 304 "Experimental Drivers" but it is not the most up to date version that Steam wants. I think i found them i just need to download & setup the drivers when i dont have 10 other things on this computer :\
